There are at least 2 threads showing a letter received today from Lowells, and I received the identical letter this morning, as did my sister!

We apologise for the delay in responding to the query that you raised with us. We have been making every effort to contact the original client to resolve the matter on your behalf.

After reviewing the account and in the light of the timescales it has taken to achieve a satisfactory response, we are prepared to take a commerical view in relation to this matter and as a gesture of goodwill and strictly without and admission of liability are prepared to close the account. We will ensure your credit file will be amended to reflect this outcome, if indeed this is applicable to you.

We trust that you will find this satisfactory and that this matter is now closed.

To be honest, I think they're starting to panic and rightly so. You must all have noticed the number of Lowell - related threads both here and on other very helpful sites.

Maybe Lowell are finally starting to realise that their bullying, often legally dubious tactics aren't producing their desired results? Maybe they'll even have a complete overhaul of their modus operandi and start conducting their business within the confines of the law as it stands?

Yeah, right... :|

I suspect that they have realised it is pointless spending time and money on 'non performing' accounts and instead they should be concentrating on debts which are easier to enforce/collect.

They haven't said that they won't be selling the debts on however, it is only a closed matter for Lowells !!!

Perhaps they have stopped dealing with the orginal creditors concerned, as they can't get hold of the paperwork from them when it is required. This would make collection very difficult.

There is also the issue of the tide of newer debts that have been created in the current recession. Why incur costs trying to collect on old debts, when there will be newer easier to collect debts available to them.

We could do with some help from you.

Be careful here chaps, this could be one of their devious ways of getting you to to acknowledge, and reset the SB clock.

Unlikely as the owners of any aleged debt will have zero knowledge as to the legality and enforceability of such debt especially if they bought them in a portfolio of debts where they are not given the history of the all the accounts they have bought, hence then buying all of the unenforceable lemons that no-one else has been able to collect on....

Who ever heard of someone getting a job at the Jobcentre? The unemployed are sent there as penance for their sins, not to help them find work!

It would be interesting to note who the original creditors were in regard to the letters received from Lowell. If people post these details up, we might see a theme emerging.

Perhaps Lowells have stopped dealing with a certain company or they have lost the contract.

I wondered that myself (no, honest 8-))

for me, it was the one that supplies those horrid green CCs - but was a loan with them - you know, scrambled / poached / pickled / boiled

If this is the case, then perhaps it is indeed the end of the road - they have made it quite clear to me in writing that they PURCHASED the debt (not on behalf of...), so the OC probably has no further interest in the file (as it sold it and got some of its money back) and the DCA can no longer get the paperwork it needs.

Interestingly though, I still get an annual 'statement' from the OC - would have thought these would have stopped. Perhaps they were sold to the DCA on 'sale or return' terms - ie if they don't recover anything, they will sell it back to the OC, who will then sell it again to a different DCA to have a go.

Has anyone seen any change in their CR Profile? Do you expect to?

If they don't, should I push them to (an the basis they said they would) or am I best leaving this alone - it'll drop off in just over 2 years as it stands

Well, I've been checking my profile pretty much every week and was starting to lose hope that they would remove it, but I can confirm that this has now dropped off from both the EX and EQ reports! (not checked CC)

happy days

Well Lowells are up for sale... they've valued themselves at £400m so maybe they're doing an audit & getting rid of all the dross a/cs before a prospective buyer audits the books... in which case the value will have to be reassessed & it'll be nearer the 2p mark.

Ah, didn't know that.

made a pre-tax loss of £8.5m for the year to August 2009.

And this explains a few things....

Exponent [owner of Lowell] also owns trainline.com, which purchases rail tickets through the internet.

You could alway put in an offer to buy them. A cheeky offer perhaps, but as they were making a loss, you might have to take on their debts.

I like a bit of karma. ;) *just to clarify: to those who are the most deserving of it, of course, but in the months of cuts, I imagine many DCAs will feel the 'bite' of it, then what they have doled out to other, will come home to roost; that's not being nasty in anway shape or form; the only problem I could envision is, if any of their operations close over here, how long would it be before they outsource to overseas call centres; just an idea*
