You haven't installed the chip driver. This controls the usb ports.

OK, printer installed fine, ultimate is 64 bit so can see all 4 gig of my memory fine (people with a 32 bit operating system have problems with this! I'll expand if anyone needs me to!) One little niggle I've had, Windows Live Messenger does not go into the task bar like it does on XP and Vista... Right click the icon before loading it and select compatibility mode, run it in vista service pack 2 and it runs perfectly! Thats a Microsoft product, I'd have expected that one to run better on Windows 7 than any other operating system!

Oh well... will report more niggles if and when they happen

Features that are nice, Drag something to the top of your screen it becomes full screen, drag to the left it goes half screen left, drag to the right hald screen right, Shake it and all other windows minimise LOL hours of fun :p

Oooh, sounds interesting... What would it cost to upgrade from Vista, anyone knows?

amazon will have a good price. If you are currently a student (although they didn't even ask me for any proof) there are some websites. I got mine from pugh.co.uk

Windows 7 certainly looks interesting enough, but it's going to have to prove itself as a solid and reliable system for at least a year or so before systems administrators - Tez included - start letting it into their domains.

That said, I'm tempted to acquire a copy on a test machine, as I'd like to see just how it performs, or fails as the case may be, when plugged into a corporate domain environment, instead of just a home user system.

Of course, ultimately, there is little point or need to 'upgrade' to a newer system simply because it's fashionable to do so. XP continues to be, especially in corporate environments, the most popular operating system for a good reason, or, rather, several dozen good reasons.

Until XP actually becomes obsolete, which it of course will eventually do, why change?

I have had a number of workstations running the RTM at work since it was released via MSDN - works fine.

Is this in a domain environment or a workgroup? If the former, I'd suspect a 2008 server, but how's its AD and GP support? And does it properly support a .NET framework?

The DC is a Win2k3 R2 server.

To take full advantage of all the new admin features via AD and GPs you do need Win2k8 R2.

I have just set one up and will be promoting it soon and raising the domain functional level as soon as I can.

The Win7 workstations are manageable via the win2k3 server though.

That interests me more and more. I run a cluster of 8 Win2k3 R2 servers powering the domain environment for the company I work for, so I'm even more tempted to try out a Windows 7 client machine as a test now.

The question as to will it be needed / used by business over windows XP is a very good one. IMHO it will be taken up by businesses next year. (that is nothing more than a hunch on the fact that businesses normally upgrade every 2 Microsoft OS's, and Windows 7 looks good and appears very stable! :p)

more little features that are nice (dunno if these were ever on Vista... My better half had vista on her laptop and I didn't like it or touch it!)

Sticky notes:- These are just like post-it notes that you can put on your screen and type little reminders.

Snipping tool:- this is like a drag box that creates a screen shot of whatever is inside it.

The Task-bar (aka Super-bar :p):- You can drag icons onto it to quick launch them, hover over the programs that are open and get a small preview, hover over the small preview and it gives you a full preview. You can windows key + number to open/maximize the corresponding program... much easier (and I know this is pretty much what apples OS X does!)

Again I'll report more as I find it!

There is of course also a very valid precedent for retaining XP, or any older technology for that matter. Unless the nature of your business absolutely requires an upgrade, the older technology is very well established, familiar and well known to both end users and technical staff alike.

With all the bugs and quirks of a system well known, and literally thousands of online discussion fora on all aspects of that system, corporate administration of those systems becomes easier, faster, and more cost effective.

In the case of XP, there was such a massive backlash against Micro$oft from IT professionals that they were forced to U-Turn and start allowing their partners (Dell, HP, Acer, etc.) to start selling XP machines as an alternative to the abortion that was Vista.

In time, of course, there will be a change over, as is natural. Old systems will die off, and new systems will handle tasks far more efficiently, but it will be interesting to see if Micro$oft attempt the same with Windows 7 that they did with Vista, that is to say forcing their aforementioned business partners to sell only that OS, thus forcing customers into taking it on. I suspect they'll have learnt the - very expensive - lessons from the Vista debacle and will continue, at least for a year, to allow dual OS options.
