Hi All!

Sorry if this has already been asked...

I am only a part-time student, which means that my university point blank refuse to give me a council tax exemption form.

CAB however advise that anyone studying over 21 hours a week, be it tutored or simply home studying is exempt.

Is there any other way of proving to the authorities that I should be exempt? I have payslips showing that I am only in paid work for 2-3 days a week, but without proof from my University of how much unpaid study I put in, what options do I have?

Thanks in advance, even if it's just a link to where this has already been asked!

I am afraid the CAB is incorrect. If you are in advanced education, which you are if you are at Uni- then what matters is how the course is defined by the Uni. if it is defined as Part Time then you are Part Time no matter how many hours you study. Studying means supervised study- not studying at home or reading or preparing. The Uni has final and absolute say who gets a C Tax exemption, I am afraid.

You can always check if you qualify for single occupancy reduction (if you live by yourself or if all those who live with you are "invisible" for C Tax purpose, like FT students, under 18s, overseas students and their partner) or apply for C Tax Benefit.

The form my uni gives is a Certificate of Attendance - not a 'council tax exemption form', but when I send it to the council, they recognise this Certificate of Attendance as proof of being a student and give you the tax exemption no problem. I have done this for the last two years without the slightest of problems.

It sounds like your uni are being bang out of order. Try asking for a certificate of attendance, rather than a council tax exemption form. You may choose to ask for a certificate of attendance for a number of reasons:

(i) proof that you are a student, to get exemption from council tax;

(ii) to send to other institutions that you are applying to if they so require;

(iii) to give to your employer to prove you are a student and therefore exempt from income tax;

(iv) if you are self-employed: to give to the tax man to prove you are a student and therefore entitled to an income tax refund;

(v) any other reason - if you want one, they are obliged to print one out for you.

However, I don't know how much this differs being a part-time rather than full-time student.

If you still have difficulties, your personal tutor (if you uni has such a scheme) may prove a good help as they are supposed to advise you on all problems and queries, not just academic ones. Don't give up - it sounds like the jobsworths in the office for printing certificates/forms at your uni are being evasive and trying their utmost to inconvenience you but you will get there in the end if you truly deserve an exemption according to the rules.

Hi Guys....

I'm new to this and hope someone can be of assistance.. 1st of all I've had great difficulty in trying to find where I can create a POST...

My query relates to Council Tax Exemption....

My property was vacant, unfurnished and due to undergo some major renovation.

I wrote to the Council to advise them of the situation...

The renovation work took approx 5 - 8 months and then the property remained empty for

a further 6 months before a tenant moved in.... The Council are claiming they have no record of being advised and therefore cannot give an exemption as they were not able to validate my claim for exemption.

I do not live in the U.K. and have been communicating with them be email... I have a scanned copy of the letter that I can send.... Having read some of your threads of not signing and just printing my name because unscrupulous rogues can fake signatures, makes me reluctant to send the letter..

Pls advise...
