Don't know if anyone can offer any insight into this, but here goes anyway.

My wife was recently given some gift vouchers to be used in a variety of stores. She wanted some wheel trims for her car and got them (using the vouchers) from Halfords.

However on returning home we discovered that the wheel trims were not appropriate as the design of them could not be fitted to her car. There was no model exclusion on the box. On returning to the store although they agreed to return the vouchers they would only be for use in Halfords and not anywhere else. Does anyone know what the legal situation on this? It would appear that it whichever way you do business it limits the multi store vouchers to Halfords only on this occasion?

Answer: I don't know.

I had the same problem in my years of poverty with Provident vouchers, used in Dorothy Perkins, and they would only "refund" in DP vouchers, thereby restricting the shopping possibilities. Never found out whether there was anything I could have done, except vote with my feet (which I did).

I'll be very interested if anyone knows.

I used to work for a High Street stationers; they accepted Choice High Street vouchers, but my manager always stipulated that we give store vouchers back in refund situations. We weren't even allowed to give cash as change for them - if the customer bought £8 worth of items with a £10 voucher, the store kept the £2 change.

Now I was sure there was something about this where they have to give you your change and if they dont have small enough vouchers that is their problem not yours although im probably wrong but to say tough to your £2 change is very wrong in my opinion

It's actually printed on that particular brand of voucher that the store accepting the vouchers does not have to give change. I thought it was unfair too, that's why I checked the small print on the back. They're 'Choice' vouchers, don't know if anyone's got one that they can check themselves.

Im not too sure on this one but ring the H/O and ask them and Halfords was part of the Boots group but I think they sold it off again and looking at the web site you can only use them at Halfords.

Normally it forms part of the conditions of the vouchers.

However, if you say the trims were just inappropriate and not faulty, and presuming Halfords have not claimed that they are suitable for your car (did they?) then you have no legal right to a refund whatsoever anyway, so any offer from Halfords of their own gift vouchers is over and above your statutory rights and purely a gesture of goodwill.
