Refused Bank Account - any suggestions?

I have sent my letter off the Abbey for the refunding of my charges, and as per advice, looked to set up an account with Barclays, with whom my wife banks.

 

However, after sitting there answering questions for half an hour, 'the computer said no'!

 

I wasn't asking for any credit, no overdraft, no loans, just a bank account.

 

I know (and admitted to) a CCJ which is being settled at the end of this month when i change mortgage companies, but as far as i know that is the only 'bad' bit of credit still live in my history (and yes i will be going to Equifax to get a copy of my credit file).

 

Barclays ran a credit check whilst doing the application, so presumably i really don't want to apply to loads of other banks, as they will presumably also run credit checks, which then makes my file look cr@p.

 

Are there any banks, that are better than others for people with adverse credit history (which i am the first to admit i have!), or are they all thick and think that as i don't want any credit from them, that i must be a risk!

Try the Nationwide, they'll give anyone (no offence) a basic 'Flex account' lets you pay bills, etc, just no overdraft or debit card.

Coop Cashminder is pretty good as well and comes with an Electron card.

try a natwest step account comes with a solo card

As i do need a debit card of some description, I think I'll leave the Nationwide one alone for now!
