Friend has just got a labrador puppy. They are renown for their chewing. Does any insurance company cover this type of damage. Most cover the dog if they chew other peoples stuff but not your own.

HI Juli99,

Every insurance policy I have come across has an exemption clause for damages caused by domestic pets, and so no insurer that I know will cover this damage.

However, my dogs literally obliterated my house when they were pups, and if anyone can tell me if there IS one that covers it, please let me know as I will definitely be getting it in the future.

I might just add, that insurance companies widen the clause to state that it will not cover "ANY damage to property caused by domestic animals" and so you may find that even if the dog chews someone else's property, it won't be covered.

Our Spaniel chewed all the carpet my insurance would not cover it, and the skirting board, all you can do unfortunatley is put baby gates up whilst pups and just replace it all when they are older, I have repalced everything now, you can do it cheap if your handy with a saw etc. but I searched everywhere for pets and even tried to get it underwritten but no joy

Saga Coverplus policies do not have this exclusion. However, you must be over 50 years old and, as they are policies that have very few exclusions, they cost a bit!!

I would add that if a visitor to the house has their belongings chewed to death by your dog then they should claim against their own policy. Their extension for cover for personal possessions away from the home should take care of it. :)

I've just been browsing old threads as I'm new to the board, this will probably be too late but....

some companys exclude damage caused by "your" domestic pet, now if somebody elses dog was to do this and you had extended accidental damage you could claim ;)

Pilbers, that would prob be under Accidental Damage coz anybody could have knocked it off the unit. Chewing and scratching e.g. "normal" pet behaviour isn't usually covered. But if your animal is sick for example you can argue that it isn't "normal" behaviour and they would have paid under AD if a child had been sick.

So the trick is to cover all the scratch marks with vomit.....

I've just read the More Than policy and it does exclude damge by domestic pets.

I'm not aware of any insurer who does cover damage by domestic pets. It is a standard exclusion. The public liability extension of most policies will deal with any loss or injury caused to other people by dogs not covered by the Dangerous Dogs Act. The same cover is applied to Pet insurance. I have both my Dalmatians insured with More Than and the policy cover is excellent but it still doesn't cover chewed kitchen floor!

Advice given is either my experience or my opinion and is given without liability. If in doubt, consult a qualified professional.

If you PM me for advice I will only reply in your own thread

Never under estimate your ability. I won over £17,000!
