Am planning a move to NI to be near family for support and just wondered what will happen with regard transferring benefits over.

I am assuming as far as child benefit and child tax credits are concerned it will just be case of a call to notify them of a change of address but not so sure about Income Support and ESA as I know NI have their own SSA.

Worrying about whether the ESA will have to be a new claim therefore having to start the whole sorry process all over again...

Has anyone any experience or knowledge regarding this?

Many thanks.

I have found the answer to my own question.....

If you are getting Incapacity Benefit or Employment Support Allowance and move from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, currently you cannot simply transfer your claim across. You have to submit a fresh claim for ESA to the Social Security Agency.

You may lose money because you will go back onto the lower assessment rate of ESA or because you no longer meet the contribution conditions.

The SSA had now agreed to make extra-statutory payments to anyone who has lost money on their Contribution Based Employment Support Allowance as a result of their move. If you have been affected, you should contact the Special Payments Team within ESA or consult an experienced adviser, for example, at a Citizens Advice Bureau. To search for details of your nearest CAB, including those that can give advice by email, click on nearest CAB.
