I'm wondering if anyone can advise me on the following:

This matter is entriely my fault, i was guaranteed a payment of £1000 into my natwest bank account in lieu of some consutlancy work i did - this money didn't get paid in when it was guaranteed and unfortunately i was very trusting as i was away from home i didn't have any access to internet so didn't check my balance for 2 weeks which is very unlike me (Lesson learnt dont worry!).

Because of this my account was a mess and in total for the last month i was charged £654 by my bank  they didn't contact me in writing or anything and im in a complete financial mess now as virtually none of my esential household bills have left my account.

Any advice on what i can do would be so gratefully received - im £6 short of my rent and they have refused to extend my overdraft by this account to ensure it goes out of my account which will of course incur further charges

I am surprised. I believe most banks have a maximum charge per day or per month. Have you checked the fine print of the bank's rules? Presumably your account was not hit by £30 penalty daily spread over each of 22 working days in a month.

It's possible the punitive charges were sanctioned by human employees, and their IT system did not have automated checks to countermand 4 penalties where their own rules say only 1 penalty is applicable per day even if 4 bounces occurred.

Perhaps your bank would be interested in human intervention and reduction if you point out a News of the World interest in your story, and its aftermath.

This is what shocked me so very much - as i always understood there was a limit to the number of charges which could be placed on your account over any 1 month period but ive double checked hte volume of charges and they total whopping £654. I haven't got any kind of special account its a normal run of the mill current account and there is in the terms a limit ot the number of charges which should be applied for the month.

I've emailed the bank about it as i want to make sure i have an audit trail on this matter but i just cant belive they could eb so incompetent I have gone over my overdraft limit before but they should have surely seen that the activity on my aco**** just wasn't right in line with my profile!

If it is human error its a pretty big one isn't it, ive had no end of problems with Natwest over the years starting when chip and pin came in, changes of address - they just don't seem to know what they are doing, or is it just me?

At least one person does know what they're doing!! What were the charges comprised of? My guess, Card misuse, Unpaid items any others?

I'll add an additional yes and No. Yes for paid referral fees, £30 an item(max 3 a months) and No for the rest of the charges
