I don't know if everyone is aware, but a great way for checking to see whether you have been charged any penalty charges is to check your credit history file. Well, acutally its more a pointer in the right direction!

There are various mechanisims for doing this. The cheapest involves posting a cheque for two pounds to the two main credit file companies:-

Experian and Equifax

http://www.experian.co.uk/consumer/index.html

https://www.econsumer.equifax.co.uk/consumer/uk/gb_consumerletter.ehtml

Both these companies will try to sell you more expensive online reports, however they are obliged to send you the 2 pound reports by post if you demand them.

Looking back through your credit history you can clearly see any late payments, and make the subsequent enquiries to see whether you were charged a penalty.

Hope this information helps someone. We don't all keep out statements for six years, and these reports are a good pointer for who to pursue.
