I have nothing but problems with my local PC World. First off a set of headphones bought for gaming didn't work. Tried to take them back but no go as they work on their pcs. I swallowed that one as it was a £30 loss and experience.

Now I have tried to return a network card that cost £80 and they wont take it back as, yes it works on their pcs. Surely this has not legal as its not doing what I bought it for??

They have to do something only if it's faulty.

If they test it and it works then it isn't faulty.

Either:

Get the tech guys to help install it as either

a) You get it working

b) there own experts won't be able to get it too work on a compatable machine.

Take the machine in yourself and show them its not working

Just make sure everything is installed correctly and all the specs match up.

But it's not enough that it works on one PC somewhere in the world. It needs to work on any machine that meets the advertised specifications. Otherwise it is not fit for the purpose sold.

Post by me are intended as a discussion of the issues involved, as these are of general interest to me and others on the forum. Although it is hoped such discussion will be of use to readers, before exposing yourself to risk of loss you should not rely on any principles discussed without confirming the situation with a qualified person.

Don't be stupid.

That is like saying Vista is unfit for purpose because it runs slowly on a Celeron 1 GHz with 512 MB RAM and onboard graphics.

It clearly isn't, but it would be better on another PC.

It should be in the mind of both parties that the product will work on a machine that meets the specifictions required of that product. If it works one one machine but not another, then there is problem with that other machine. That first needs to be investigated.

i don't know what these "testing" computers are like in PC World. They have to be representative of what computers are like in people's homes. There is no point in a product working on a machine hat has no other programs running on it. Presumable an average computer has several programs running on it, and a product should work with a computer that is as such.

did you give any specification about your computer when you bought the item - e.g, sying you need it to run on such and such? If so then that is a sale by description.

Things like network cards and headphones are pretty generic, they will work on 99.99% of windows PC's regardless of spec.

Pink are you running windows XP?

Have you checked under device manager

(right click my computer, properties, hardware, device manager)

to see if windows has recognised the network card? any question marks or warning signs on this list indicate that a device is not working correctly.

Sorry the card was £54, it is a Netgear WPN311.

The PC was originally running Vista Home basic, the disc drivers were not compataible so I down loaded the drivers with Vista support as per the netgear website. After this approach failed I installed and fully patched XP pro and then attempted to reinstall the card.. guess what.. it froze and was unbootable. Oh and I tried the card in all available PCI slots...

I am starting to suspect there may be a problem with the PCs PCI bus.. guess where the PC came from..

The machine is currently running with another slower network card from netgear again, it stays stable most of the time but now and again it becomes unresponsive, not the same lock as above but no programs respond. This strikes me as odd as it is a clean install of XP.

I have installed at least 5 wifi networks and have NEVER encountered problems like this.

Then the problem is probably with the PC rather than the card, so they are right not to take the card back if they don't believe it to be faulty.

Better still; take both back and get the techs to sort it.

OK, I'll take the pc back then as that was only bought 2 weeks ago!

yep, take it back, it sounds like a motherboard/BIOS fault considering the headphones dont work either, and both the headphones and network card work OK on other machines.

Insist on a brand new replacement rather than a repair, considering the age of the computer and the obvious faults, its unfit for purpose.

  • 2 months later...

Sometimes devices conflict. It happens, as long as the card and packaging are kept in good condition I would expect any reasonable IT supplier to at least take it back in exchange for you to try a card with a different chip set.

Also are you saying the PC is only two weeks old? Doesn't it have a network adapter on board already?

note to all.

not only does a computer have to be the minimum specs listed on the packaging. but it actually has to work and be free of viruses. posters on here seem to beleive that as long as your computer meets the specs then its the retailers fault. get some quality antivirus and spyscanning software. remember free programs are free for a reason. because they do not always find everything. find the lab test websites that test virus an spyware software. dont just go for the ones that appear just one month a year go for the one that appears everymonth.

note about my red reputation points. certain individuals did not like being corrected and asked to show proof. rather then providing proof they simply began insulting my grammar. once i then retaliated they then started reporting me. again no actual proof just their presumptions that my advice is inaccurate. but again they show no proof. especially when i get extra bad points from the same thread from the same person. this is just them being vindictive. wish they would grow up.
