Hi all,

I purchased a tomtom510 and recently went to use it and it would not turn on.

It is still well within its warranty as its about a month old.

BUT! im usually religious about receipts but this one i have lost , i bought the tomtom from a local comet store - would i be able to get proof of this to send it back to tomtom?

What would you guys do in this situation?

Many thanks in advance.

First of all you don't really want to be sending it back to Tomtom, you'd want to be going back to Comet where you bought it, as your contract is with them and your statutory rights under the Sale of Goods Act would be with them.

(If you accept repairs or replacements from the manufacturer under the warranty, this can affect your rights under the Sale of Goods Act if things go wrong in the future).

And the short answer is, you need proof of purchase. A till receipt is obviously the best proof of purchase, but a bank statement, credit card statement or cheque stub would suffice. As long as you didn't pay in cash, you should be fine.

Please note I'm not insured in this capacity, so if you need to, do get official legal advice.

I'm not trying to state the obvious here, but did you charge it fully first, plus, how long did you hold the power button in for when you first tried to turn it on ? Whenever I allow the battery on mine to go completely flat (something you should do about once a month) it takes at least 5 to 10 seconds holding the button in to get it to boot up after a charge.

If you did pay cash, and you haven't got the receipt, the serial number is traceable back to the retailer, plus, the memory on the TomTom keeps a record of it's "birthday", i.e. the first time it was ever turned on, that would be accessable by the repairer.

Finaly, the 510 has not been out for a year yet, so that alone would prove that it's still under warranty, unfortunately, if you still cannot prove you bought it from CONet you may have to send it back to TomToms UK repair people.
