My wife was caught by an hand held speed camera doing 41mph in a 30 zone.

 

Could she be banned from driving? She has had a clean license for years.

 

Anyone got any ideas how much fine she could face?

It depends on the details.

The starting point is that she would receive a FPN, not a summons.

As she has no points currently she wouldn't be facing a ban if she received a FPN.

 

However, the details would include if doing 41 in that area, at that time, the way she was driving was "just speeding" (for want of a better expression) or "fell below the standards of the reasonable driver", where she might be summonsed if her driving was felt to be careless.........

Unless this was in Scotland 41 in a 30 would normally see the offer of a speed awareness course which takes half a day but avoids any points on her licence. The cost varies by area but is typically of the order of £100. If she' doesn't do a course it will be a fixed penalty (3 points and £100). She won't be getting banned.
