tried that sysprep OOBE method and it worked a treat it booted up, installed the hardware for the new/different spec, and is working ok. all profiles/programs/applications/updates/emails etc all still there. thanks to sevenforums for that article.

so, if your putting an existing drive on to a new/different spec, and it wont boot, could try that sysprep (at yr own risk, there may be some limitations depending on yr circs, and reactivation may be required). no need to do a fresh install and then have to reinstall everything.

general tip as well; always keep regular back ups, including a system image. could save a lot of hassle if things go wrong.

I always make a system image if I find issues and want to reset it then it's just 40 mins or so and I'm back up and running.

and its so easy to do, and restore with, in w7. in the 'back up' tool re 'create system image'.

 

when i did that sysprep method re existing drive to new hardware/system, the only thing that needed manual reinstall was MSE. everything else was kept, no need to manually reinstall anything. the auto install of the different hardware (and a couple of those initial w7 setup q's) was quick. its such an easy option should a drive not boot on new hardware/system.

a performance tip;

double check that your processors frequency speed is not being throttled by 'processor power management' (unless its wanted:) ), partic on the laptop.

check the bios for any related settings eg 'cool n quiet'- turn it off (or leave on if wanted).

check the operating systems 'power options' in control panel - 'change plan settings' -> 'change advanced...' -> 'processor power management' change as required. 100% min and max if wanted full all the time.

been monitoring this. it seems that when there is a load on the cpu, its speed increases auto. so, it may be an idea to keep the processor power management (reduced frequency) on re a laptop to preserve battery life (unplugged) when its not in use. depends on yr requirements.

re a v restrictive budget

what wld you go for;

dual core amd cpu (eg fm2 a4 6300, dual channel, 65w, radeon hd on chip) or quad core amd a4 (am1 athlon 5350, single channel, 25w, radeon r3 on chip). with;

2x4gb ddr3 or 1x8gb respectively required, + new mobo, re low - mid (no high end gaming) desktop.

not really it was still sticking on 'checking for updates' for ages, slowing down the pc.

but, have found that clearing the temp files/old prefetch data (with something like cc cleaner) has helped speed up winupdate.

You can also clear the temp folder by searching %temp% this will bring it up open it clear it done... There are plenty of system tools around to clear up your system and helps keep it tickey boo and fast.

 

Also don't forget the installation folder where items are stored an no longer needed...

it must have been the 'prefetch data'?

cleared it on a couple of pc's, and winupdate came up quite sooner (some minutes) rather than the usual hours later...

will now be using cc cleaner more often, partic re clearing prefetch

update. to speed up winupdate on the likes of win 7, ensure important and critical updates are installed (they can be done stand alone via the recent roll up).

watch out though for the nuisance/hog telemetry updates.

how about that. 2 exact same model graphics cards, bought at the same time, used on the same setup (in different pc's), both die within a couple of weeks of each other! is there a kill switch in consumer pc electronics....

they are both in different pc's. both gigabyte motherboards.

and cards are quite old.

one pc has a new power supply (coolermaster 500w 80plus)

beep codes say g'card.

neither card works in the other system.

any thoughts?

What GPU's are they? DO you have enough amps on the 12v rails to support the cards? Have you stress tested the PSU's? Could they be surging? Theres a ton of things it could be.

both geforce 7900 gs 450m ddr3. v old

they have worked fine, until just now.

mobo's - gig m61sme-s2, m68m-s2p. again both quite old.

crucial 2 gig older ddr2, and 2gb ddr2 (pc2-6400) respectively

new psu on 61, older modular 500w on the 68. rails seem sufficient. haven't stress tested.

i had put it down to old age, and coincidence. though it did seem odd that they the cards both went around the same time.

but, if think it cld be something else. please let me know. cheers.

thats what i thought' post #143. they lasted quite awhile though, don't know what the expected lifespan wld be?

just seemed odd that they both died at about the same time.
