There is no legal requirement to have any smoke alarms in single dwelling rented properties, however the LL has a duty to do a fire risk assessment and address the findings! ( battery powered smoke detectors as a minimum ) which I presume were put in even if you did it.

As far as Loft conversion goes, as said did you use it? if it was rented as a 3 bed including loft conversion and you did not in fact use it as such, then you could claim misrepresentation and the reduction in rent accordingly. ( whatever the difference is in your area between a 2 and 3 bed property; council may be able advise ).
