My son's insurance company has bumped up his premium, 3 months into the 12 months because they say the premium should have been based on the date he started driving this car and the date it was registered to him. The car was previously mine for 10 years and he drove it frequently and was often insured on it so he wrote that he had been driving it for 6-7 years (which is true). However that does not wash with them - they care not what date he started driving or what insurance he has held, just the date this car went into his name (12 months ago).

i rang the AA for advice and they were flummoxed.

Has anyone heard of this before? seems very strange.

He cannot afford the new premium but cannot cancel the insurance without incurring a £320 fine either. So we are a bit stuck!

Any advice welcome

check the application form questions;

it should ask - when you purchased car?

How long have you held full uk licience

had any previous insurance in your name

any ncb etc.

if these have been answered accurately I dont see where the confusion is.

Take it up with the broker AA to sort out.
