Okay, writing this on behalf of my stressed father.

Back in April he got caught for speeding, hands up he did it.

He has been offered a Speed awareness course and can not attend due to being self employed and relying on working. He can not afford to take time off. He would prefer to pay the fine and have 3 points on his license. Plus he has issues with being on the course.

How on earth can we tell them this.

Have tried calling a local fixed penalty office, no luck. Tried Central Ticket office, no answer.

If he ignored booking the course, will he get the coniditinal offer of the points/ fine and info on how to pay without going to court.

Hello there. I don't know too much about this, but who wrote the letter asking him to book the course? Maybe he could talk to them. I thought the default was that you took the points, but obviously he doesn't want to have other problems on top.

I expect someone in the know will be along later, once their day jobs permit.

When he fails to turn up. Police are notified and your back square one. You,ll get a letter with how to pay.

Dont you have to pay for the course, if he does then not bother to turn up he will end up paying both the fine and for the course surely? What he needs to do is decline the offer and take the FPN.

the notice of intent to prosecute offers a fine and 3 points. your also offered the course instead of the points and fine on certain conditions

if you don't want the course you just send a cheque and your licence in.

if you fail to respond you normally get a reminder before prosecution.

did he receive the notice of intent to prosecute

can he scan the letter or tell us what the letter says

:???: what me. never heard of you never had a debt with you.

When he was sent the original letter about the offence he opted to have the fine/points rather then the course. But he recieved a letter for the course instead. We have contacted the people who run the course now, we are just waiting a call back as they were busy.

The payment for the course is £23 more then the £60 fine. So it looks like the police are trying to get more money from people!

Well, you might see it like that. A friend of ours preferred to take the course rather than have the points on his licence. I guess it's horses for courses.

I imagine your father committed the alleged offence? [Edit. Sorry, you said he did in your first post.]

dont forget, having the points on his licence could increase his insurance premiums for the next 4 yrs aswell, which could cost him more than the lost days work each year.

i am not saying this would/will happen but it also something to consider

the cost is for the awareness course. if you opt for the awareness course you pay them direct and not the police.

also bear in mind once you have the points your insurance will also go up

Not necesssarily, it depends on your insurance company and how they view the offence, especially for a "first offence".

Speeding fines are so easy to pick up now for the majority of drivers that for "small transgressions" (which this must be otherwise he wouldn't have been offered the course) many insurance companies don't immediately move your premium.
