I am the proud owner of a Ford Galaxy 1.9 tdi, year 03. I have had a problem with the clutch for over a year now.I first reported the fault when the 60,000 mile service was due. But Ford's couldn't find any thing wrong with it. The pedal moves up and down on it's own?? It sometimes gets stuck half way, you have to pull it up with your foot! It gets stuck in first and reverse gears, it burns clutches big time.

In the past nine months Ford's have fitted:

4 clutches, clutch bearings

3 Master Cylinders

3 Slave Cylinders

2 Fly Wheels

And all other pipes and parts connected to the clutch system.

Still the fault remains, worse than ever. Ford's have run out of ideas, as to what the fault is...

Hummmm, didn't Ford design and build it???? They have now suggested it could be the Gearbox.

That's only £4200.00 For a new one. I don't mind, it was reported when the vehicle was still under warranty, it should be covered..... NOT!!!!..... Ford's won't do it because, I have not had it serviced at a Ford garage since the 60,000 mile service, So what!.... I had it serviced by my brother, he works for Range Rover. Why would I have it serviced by them, they couldn't find the fault! Plus because the vehicle has done another 57,000 miles since I reported it? But if they had fixed it when I reported it, a year ago then there wouldn't be an extra 57,000 miles on it, common sense really?????!!!!!! Ford's have now refused to do anymore work on the vehicle, I have tried to discuss the warranty refusal with Ford's customer relations department, not only do they know nothing about cars, they don't make the decisions, No, no, no, the people who decided these stupid excuses are not allowed contact with the outside world, typical really, with no common sense or brains enough to think of a realistic reason,

They can't possibly be human!

:-x What B*****s! excuses for not being able to repair one of their own vehicles.:-x

My advice...

Had about 200 faults with air con unit first off a rubber grommit failed and the wires through the bulkhead chafed and shorted, then the air con would just cut out and guff humid air at you. In the end they charged/discharged etc etc all the time I was telling them its the compressor and they were no its not. After about 150 visits they replaced the clutch in the compressor and the air con then worked for about 200 miles before going again.

Went back in must have been a faulty clutch replaced again, this one lasted 30 miles in the end they replaced the compressor and worked like a charm afterwards.

Also after 79,000 miles the shell bearings failed on piston 3 resulting in a large bang lol - Ford did put their hands up to this one and paid for all of it wonder if that would have happened had it not been a lease car ;)

1 short engine later there was a slight coolant leak they took it in and fixed it picked it up next day got 20 miles and temp gauge goes off the dial and steam every where and engine cuts out, called AA - no water in the bottle??

Waited for it to cool and topped up drove off 20 miles later same thing happened, walked into Ford garage and ranted at the receptionist - YOU BROKE MY CAR shoulda seen her face PMSL.

They took it in and surprise surprise could not find a fault, drove it for 15 mins myself and same thing happened at this point I was about to get rid of it so said telly you what get lost it can go back to the lease co broken.

Last guy delivery car on a trailer this one drove my new car from Liverpool to Norwich arrived 9pm and got 30 miles on way home and yes you guessed it I had to call the AA out to tow him all the way home ROFLMAO

Rule of thumb? Stay away from Ford!!!!!

As long as the vehicle has been serviced in accordance with the manufacturers schedule, it doesn't have to be serviced by one of the manufacturers dealers. Any garage can service it. The point that the warranty doesn't cover the vehicle because you had it serviced elsewhere is nonsense.

Hi all, thanks for all comments

It's quite soothing to know I'm not the only person who hates;

Ford Motor Company

I am aware that I don't have to have it serviced at Ford's,

that another garage can do it, family rates, you can't bet em!

Ford's were more concerned that I had done another 57,000 miles since

the first report of the fault. But as I say, if they fixed it when I reported it,

then there wouldn't be any extra mileage, they are so dim!

When I spoke to Ford's HO, I offered to pay a percentage of the gearbox replacement because of the extra mileage, as long as this did actually repair the car. But all Gurjeet the telephone robot could say was 'I cannot discuss this matter any further with you, we have made our decision, and thats final'.

I have also been informed that Ford's had nothing to do with the making of this type of vehicle, therefore it's not surprising that they cannot fix it!

Why are they selling products that they know nothing about?

"I feel better having got that out!"

Hi ltannner

I realise this is a couple of years old but for the sake of clarity i though a bit of information would come in handy. I would doubt you have been to Ford's, they are the manufacturer, you went to Ford Dealer, some are better than others, as in all trades.

But in your case you don't even own a Ford, your Galaxy is a re-badged VW Sharan, apart from a few obvious visible bits there ain't no Ford parts on it. VW make them in Spain, or used to, and Ford re-badge them, as do Seat with their Alhambra. So no, Ford did not design and build it!

Your brother, probably, does not work for Range Rover, he works for a Land Rover dealer or independent. As Land Rover used to be owned by Ford they did collaborate on a number of vehicles, so ironically your brothers Land Rovers will have more Ford content than your Sharan, oop's sorry Galaxy.

If I've added this up correctly it's done 117,000, there are only one or two manufactures that will cover a wear and tear item past 60,000, yours has nearly double that.

I have contact with the outside world, far too much common sense, and well, brains really, and I am, indeed, Human.

My Advice....................................117,000 miles in 3 years, it's not a Taxi is it?

Do you still have it?

hi Henno

The ford mpv's were built by VW in the same factory as the VW Sharron and Seat Alhambra. This is because when the MPV craze started Ford did not have an MPV designed and ready.

The Galaxy have a common fault with the gearbox and all ford would say when i took my car there was that it needed a new gearbox and would cost £3000.00. I took it to a specialist gearbox who knew straight away what the issue was and told me how common this fault is with this type of fords galaxy's. It cost me around £1500.00 to get it fixed. i have now part exchanged it and have vowed never to purchase a another ford.

No the whole gearbox was not replaced. They opened it up and replaced a part and put it back together. They knew exactly what the problem was because all they do is gearbox's where ford dealers do not open gearbox's but just replace the whole unit

apparently the primary shaft bearings on the gear box wear and cause end float of the shaft these are tapered roller bearings this job shouldn’t really be cost £1500 quid and while your thinking never by another ford think vw as well. i just had clutch replaced at my local garage on my galaxy who couldn’t bleed it up,they replaced master cylinder purchased a vacuum bleeder at fords and vw advice. And because of my impending holiday and 2 staff being at a funeral i had to go and sort it myself. A good tip here for anyone struggling to bleed a clutch or about to fit one fill a small bucket with brake fluid and charge the cylinder 1st by compressing the piston while it is submerges take out of bucket lightly tap it with a spanner to encourage air bubbles to rise and back in bucket repeat until air bubbles stop rising in the bucket of fluid then fit to gear box worked first attempt for me you just need a large amount of brake fluid

Fromt eh description of the problem, it seems that soemthing is tight between the slave cylidner and clutch. This could be a tight operating arm that transfers the movement from the slave to the release bearing, or the release bering may be a bit tight on its guides. Inside the bell housign is not a good place for precision sliding fits as the clutch dust makes a very sticky and tenacious mess if mixed with grease.
