My laptop is only a yard from my wireless router. My kids Xbox and PS3 are upstairs. I surf the net just fine until one of them goes online with their games console. Then my pooter just slows right down.

Surely my laptop has right of way as it's the nearest to the router:p.

Has anyone else had this problem?

If all else fails, kick them where it hurts and SOD'EM;)

they could be downloading demos of games which would eat your bandwidth thus making your computer seem slow. another reason could be if they are playing a data heavy game which has to relay information quickly for the game to work. but these are two reasons amongst many as to why it slows down

They play COD Modern Warfare 2 against other people. Obviously you are right about relaying info quickly. They are out of a day and I am fine, but when they get back, that's it:mad:. I just thought that I would get the best out of the router as being the nearest.

To stop this from happening my mate who plays pc games on the net pays for an internet service with a very low ping and very good download speed and contention ratio . This is dedicated for gaming mainly he pays about £30 per month for this service.

Nope. I get around that problem by not having children. Other advantages are a relatively trouble-free life, the freedom to do as I please when I please and a large disposable income. :)

I'm afraid it doesn't quite work like that. Your ISP conenction only has a certain amount of bandwidth available and it has to be shared out amongst all the connecting devices.

It is possible to perform traffic shaping on your bandwidth (giving greater priority to certain ports than others, for example), but the process is quite technical and normally not available on home routers.

I'd say the easier option is to stop the kids playing online at certain hours, or, even better, get rid of the kids.

Alternatively, as midnight1200 suggests, you could get a dedicated connection to your house to use solely for gaming then charge them the rental fee.

Hi MM,

It's a standard Netgear one that I got from VM.

I have another router now that will be fiited tomorrow as we are changing to TalTalk, and that one is a DSL2640R/TT.

If you registered on the Member Forum for TalkTalk you'll get good advice as far as stuff like that from the other members. They did have some exclusive new routers and thats a model I'm not familiar with, so it could be one of them.

If in doubt, contact a qualified insured legal professional (or my wife... she knows EVERYTHING)

Or send a cheque or postal order payable to Reclaim the Right Ltd.

I had a suspicion it would be netgear.

I had a netgear sales rep tell me that Netgear routers were good because they recognised which user needed the most bandwidth and adjusted the settings accordingly. Whereas other routers split the bandwidth equally between users.

Now, this is all well and good until something like what the OP has experienced happens - when your internet freezes because someone in the house is downloading games etc.

As I said - the above info came from a sales rep...

Still got them 2 on VM as we had to give 30 days notice. Tried to keep the new TT box on for 10 days, but the mrs accidentally turned the bugger of for a minute yesterday:mad:.

LOL how it works according to the TalkTalk forum, is for every day you are on without interrupting it will try to increase your profile by 1, then for every 3rd disconnection it lowers it by 1, so a day with 1 disconnection will stay the same for that day. Have you done a speed test since the reboot?
