Mayor Catlipoca stands on the sidewalk, surveying the quiet street. A piece of trash, ensnared by the wind, tumbles across the road. Somewhere in the distance a dog barks.

 

With a grunt he crosses to the traffic island, and places an announcement on the notice board:

 

My fellow Catlipocians,

 

We has done well this far, and have much to celebrate about. Two Mafia is dead, but one is still out there somewhere and night is comin' on fast. Things might have been quiet around this place, but I still need your votes by 8pm tomorrow.

 

Remember people, we have just five of us left now: Ananya, Gizmo111, Castlebest, Nicsussex and JanetM, an one of youse is a Mafia.

 

So get your votes to me before 8pm Friday, and let's flush out that Mafia swine.

The citizens of Little Catlipocia gather once again on the cold wharf, colder still with the recent memory of Legs' recent work.

 

Two figures stand at the edge of the wharf, their hands tied, blindfolds fixed over their eyes. Both stand near-motionless, the chill wind snaring their cloathes and hair.

 

 

Mayor Catlipoca stands to one side of the mob, his face calm and impassive.

 

"Well Fats?" he asks.

Fats walks over to the figures, bends down, and taps at the vast concrete blocks that have been set around the feet of both people. He gives a critical grunt, taps them again, then nods.

"Theyse good, boss. Hard enough."

 

Mayor Catlipoca nods, then turns to the crowd. "This has been a strange day, my friends. Like the first day, we are here to remove not only one we believe to be a threat to this community, but also one who has failed to vote in time. May the death of Castlebest serve as a warning to those who might be backward in coming forward with their votes." The Mayor sighs. "And may the death of gizmo111 prove that we can spot a guilty man. Proceed"

 

There is a grim finality in the air as three of the Mayor's gorillas step forward and, with much grunting and weating, heave the two figures backward.

There is a great splash, and two plumes of water shoot up over the edge of the wharf. for a moment the droplets hang suspended in the oily brown air, then fall back to the inky waters and are lost.

 

 

Two hours later, as the night settles over the community of Little Catlipocia, the few remaining citizens of Little Catlipocia gather inside Fats' shop.

 

The Mayor reclines in his seat, his cool gaze running calmly over Ananya, Janet-M and Nicsussex.

 

"I have news," he states slowly. "Grave news. I'm closing up Little Catlipocia for good and moving on."

There is a long, ard pause.

 

"Let me explain," says the Mayor, lighting a cigar. "My boys have searched the rooms of gizmo111 and Castlebest, and both men was Innocent. That means there is three of you left, and one of youse is the Mafia."

the Mayor pauses to take a long draw on the cigar.

 

"You see," he continues, exhaling slowly and sending a long grey plume curling up to the ceiling. "In the night, the Mafia will whack one of you citizens. That would leave one Mafia and one Innocent in the day, and," he shakes his head, "those odds just don't work. The next day youse votes for each other, then the last Innocent gets whacked the next night. The Mafia win."

 

There is another pause after the Mayor's explanation, the citizens exchanging glances.

"I don't know which of youse three is the Mafia, and I don't care. Youse has won. I advise the two Innocents to skip town on the evenin train before they gets whacked. As for me," he growls, stretching slightly as he speaks, "it's time Fats and me found ourselves another town."
