Good luck with the interview. As to what to say, dont be too honest. Dont say you are fighting a dismissal as they might not like it.

 

What I would do is make a list of all the good things about your last job and stress those out during the interview. Make also a list of the bad things and try to summarise them together. Like you want to grow futher, or you have worked xxx years and want to make a change, something in those regions. I can imagine its not easy but the best thing is dont be too negative about your last job. This will reflect on your interview and they might not like it (i had that experience recently).

 

So stay positive, make sure you know a lot of this company and put up a big smile and go for it. Remember that if it goes well and the offer you a job, you are out of where you are now!!

Hi DNA, sorry for delay - been in a lot of meetings already this morning!

 

If you applied for this job before your dismissal from your previous job - then I assume your reason for applying was because you wanted a career move. If that is the case - then that is what you say to the question about why you applied for the job, as it is the truth!.

 

As LMS said, don't be negative about your previous employer - stress how much you enjoyed your work but want to progress your career with a large professional organisation like (name of company you are applying to).

 

Regarding references from the employer who dismissed you - we'll cross that bridge when you get this new job!!

 

Good Luck - just be yourself, and smile (not too much though!!) you'll be fine.

as for references there are several options. For one, do you have good contact with someone you worked with who can be a reference? I used not my last manager but the previous one as he was better and more positive.

As for references also, an employer cannot really give out negative feedback as this might turn against them. So if they cannot give a positive reference they often just acknowledge from when till when you worked there and that is it.

 

I would not worry about that now, like Ell-enn says, go in, have a good time, make sure you ask some questions. References can be sorted later and i bet there are enough people here who are willing to give some good advice for that.

I can't beleive my luck finding this forum.

The advice given has been fantastic and has really helped me stay positve and focused on the appeal and moving forward.

 

If it wasn't for this forum I'de probably be in bed till 11 every morning waiting for the shoddy and delayed advice the company would be offering.

 

After this I will certainly be a regular user of this site and offer help wherever I can. :)

Hey guys. What a weekend! just what I needed.

Hope you all had a good one too.

 

The interview went really well. when asked about leaving my current employer I told them I was just looking to improve my job prospects by moving to an emploer with more room for personal development.

 

I was curious as to when they would check my references so made up a story about my personal reference, the one given by someone who has known me for xxxx years.

I said he was out of the country on holiday but could put something on paper for me if need be. They then said not to worry because refrences would only be checked after about 2 months after the positition is offered.

Cunning or what! ;)

 

Hopefuly The dismissal will be overturned by then.

 

As for the appeal date I've heard nothing yet. Not to sure who to take with me. Iv'e been given the number of the employment law specialists who might sit in with me, they are set up by the city council. Will look into that.

Hi there DNA1234 - glad your interview went well. My fingers are crossed for you getting the offer soon. I wouldn't worry too much about references at this point - I usually send for references once the new employee had started and as I said before your previous employer had to be careful what they say. In the same circumstances I would send a "factual" reference, i.e. just confirming start and end dates and position- a lot of employers send these as a matter of course these days - it takes away the risk of being sued.

 

Good news about the employment law specialists - that would be a good move if you can arrange it - they will be able to give you the best advice for the appeal hearing.

Hi Ell-enn, I have received a letter from Personnel head office confirming receipt of my appeal. They say it may be a few weeks before a date is set.

I have put a copy of the letter on the box.

 

If my appeal was successful would my employer have to pay my earnings back from the date they dismissed me?

If your appeal is successful then you will be reinstated and they will have to pay your salary for the time between dismissing you and overturning the decision. You would then return to work as normal.

 

I've seen the letter regarding the arranging of your appeal hearing. To say "don't worry if you don't hear from us for a few weeks" is downright unacceptable. Appeals should be heard as soon as possible in order to minimise the stress to the employee concerned. Do you have a copy of their appeals procedure?

lol yeah, theres always a match :D

My lads got beat though. :Cry: Can't win em all though.

 

A colleague at work is getting the appeal process from the registrar office. We have been trying since yesterday but Registrar have been very hard to get hold of but we should have it on the box tonight.

 

I must admit my heart sank a little when I read that part about waiting a few weeks.

Hi Ell-enn how are you? Got tiered of leaving messages and waiting for registrar to call so I called Personell head office this morning.

They actually put me through to the lady who is investigating my appeal. She agreed to send me the procedure for appeal.

She also said a date had now been set for my appeal and was sent in the post last week, the postal strike is still on till tomorrow.

 

I have called employment law to see if anyone can come to the appeal with me. waiting on a call back there.

Do you know any other organizations who might be to sit in with me if employment law can't attend?

I'm not sure of any other official organisations who would sit in the appeal with you - wait to see what law centre says when they call back. If they can't help we'll have another think.

Unfortunately, there's not much we can do at present. I know it must be difficult to have to wait around to find out what's happening. Hopefully we have done enough for them to reconsider when the appeal is heard. I certainly think we've given them plenty to think about!

Good evening.

 

I got a call back from the employment law specialists around 6 last night. Wish I'de never got in touch with them now.

They said they would not sit in with me because the chances are that my appeal would fail even though I hadn't even told him why I was appealing or why I'de been dismissed. He then advised me to sign on and wished me luck:eek: . And their supposed to be the "specialists"!

I'm certainly not taking any of what they said seriousley. It was nearly 6pm and he was trying to get his callbacks done before he went home.

 

The postal strike has been extended indefinately so I called HR head office back and they agreed to give me the date. october 30th, Head office, London.

I can take a union rep or work colleauge to the best of their knowledge, all details are in the post to me.

I called the registrar office to ask if one of them could come in with me but they declined as it might be seen as taking sides.:rolleyes:

Lack of co-operation once again from the company.

Is that anywhere near you? You can ringto make an appointment to speak to someone in person rather than deal with it on the phone. They may be able to help with someone to attend the appeal with you. If you do get an appointment - take all the appeal documents with you.

 

Hope you can get some help there. If I lived nearer I would come with you but it's too far.

A long time ago I used to work for the MOD civilian office at their matchwork offices in speke, I know exactly where it is.:)

 

I will call ACAS tommorow. Are they a sort of union?

No one from ACAS can come to the meeting with him. The law is totally clear, he can invite a co worker or a union rep.

 

Only a union rep can talk for him, a co worker can only witness the meeting.
