I redeemed my mortgage with A&L in February 2004 and had to pay £3733.41 in "Repayment Fee" and £195.00 in "Early Closure Admin Charge". The timeline is as follows:-

20/09/2006 Following Zootscoot's wonderful example, I wrote to them requesting a refund of both charges

26/09/2006 letter received from A&L - "I am writing in response...Blah, Blah, Blah...We will get back to you sometime

02/10/2006 Letter received from A&L - "We do not agree with your view over the legality of the charges... You signed the contract" followed by a full and detailed justification for the £195 Admin Charge " retrieving the deeds, sending them to Solicitor, issuing redemtion quotes, etc" However as a gesture of goodwill, we will refund the charge we can justify.

09/10/2006 LBA sent accepting £195 as partial settlement but requesting repayment of £3733.41.

11/10/2006 Letter received "our position remains the same"

16/10/2006 MCOL issued including 8% interest of £733.96, deemed served on 21/10/2006

20/10/2006 Claim acknowledged - they have until Monday 20/11/2006 @ 4pm to lodge a defence

20/11/2006 Letter received "We have reviewed your claim and decided to settle so heres a cheque for £3733.41. Rang Jackie McGuirk accepting cheque as partial payment and wanting interest and MCOL Fee. She agreed and is raising cheque.

24/11/2006 Rang again chasing cheque and "it is being processed"

Hurray (and many thanks to Zootscoot for trailblazing)
