What are these and what to they do, read on.

Introduction

 

Social bookmarking sites are a popular way to store, classify, share and search links through the practice of folksonomy techniques on the Internet or Intranet.

 

Other than web page bookmarks, we can find services specialized to a specific subject or format. (feeds, books, videos, music, shopping items, map locations, wineries... ) and social bookmarking is also part of Social News Sites like Digg.com.

 

 

History

 

The concept of shared online bookmarks dates back to April 1996 with the launch of itList.com. Within the next three years online bookmark services became competitive, with venture-backed companies like Backflip, Blink,[citation needed] Clip2, Hotlinks, Quiver, and others entering the market. Lacking viable models for making money, most of this early generation of social bookmarking companies failed as the dot-com bubble burst. The contemporary concepts of social bookmarking and tagging took root with the launch of the web site oneview in 1999[1] and del.icio.us, in September of 2003.

 

 

Functional Overview

 

In a social bookmarking system, users store lists of Internet resources, which they find useful. These lists are either accessible to the public or a specific network, and other people with similar interests can view the links by category, tags, or even randomly. Some allow for privacy on a per-bookmark basis.

They also categorize their resources by the use of informally assigned, user-defined keywords or tags (see folksonomy). Most social bookmarking services allow users to search for bookmarks which are associated with given "tags," and rank the resources by the number of users which have bookmarked them. Many social bookmarking services also have implemented algorithms to draw inferences from the tag keywords that are assigned to resources by examining the clustering of particular keywords, and the relation of keywords to one another.

It's increasingly popularity and competition have extended the services to offer more than just sharing bookmarks, such as rating, commenting, the ability to import and export, add notes, reviews, email links, automatic notification, feed subscription, web annotation, create groups and Social Networks.

 

 

Automatic Notification

 

Since the classification and ranking of resources is a continuously evolving process, many social bookmarking services allow users to subscribe to web feeds (see RSS) based on tags, or collection of tag terms. This allows subscribers to become aware of new resources for a given topic, as they are noted, tagged, and classified by other users.

 

 

Import Export

 

The problem of importing and exporting social bookmarks between services and software, including tags and rating, have brought up several developers to create the Bookmark Interchange Format.

 

 

Advantages

 

This system has several advantages over traditional automated resource location and classification software, such as search engine spiders. All tag-based classification of Internet resources (such as web sites) is done by human beings, who understand the content of the resource, as opposed to software which algorithmically attempts to determine the meaning of a resource. This provides for semantically classified tags, which are hard to find with contemporary search engines.

Additionally, as people bookmark resources that they find useful, resources that are of more use are bookmarked by more users. Thus, such a system will "rank" a resource based on its perceived utility. This is arguably a more useful metric for end users than other systems which rank resources based on the number of external links pointing to it.

Apart from 'folksonomy' I understand each individual word, but am totally clueless as to what they all mean together, other than that I need another 4 b****y passwords and user names!!!

 

However I'm sure they'll be extremely useful to some of us.

I'm sure that your post Zoo is in English, it certainly looks like it but I don't understand a word! Well that is I understand every word in isolation but taken as a whole they might as well be Venusian!

What schools did you lot go to? Never heard of folksonomy indeed!

At last an explanation for the four icons that have recently appeared at the

bottom of each post.

Basically what Zooman is saying is that when we save,bookmark or download

an item or article to our PC at home say, we cannot access that item from

our laptop or computer at work.

Now we can post such articles and items within these icons, and not only

can we access them from any computer, but so can every one else on the

forum and we can see what they have filed also.

In a word!!...Er...NO!!!

 

I just went to the doctors and told him i have a severe headache due to the CAG site.

 

He asked Why???

 

I explained to him about the "folksonomy" a methodology of collaboratively generated, open ended labels...

 

He said, i was to go home "Rest" and take two dictionaries Oraly with plenty of water...lol.lol.lol... :) ...
