Not really sure where to put this so please move if needed :)

i brought a TV licence outright (paid for the whole year) in May this year (2013) but

ive just had a email saying my licence has expired on 30th November 2013,

The only way this could be possible is if they backdated the yearly subscription if i didnt have a licence from november 2012-may 2013

(i may not have done, i can't honestly remember)

but even if i didnt

i had no one knock on the door or prove i was watching TV from november 2012-may 2013.

So what can i do as in my eyes my TV licence should not expire until May 2014.

You are correct if no licence was in force prior to the purchase and your ID has been traced to the same address TVL can back date,

but if you had a licence then you can challenge it.

Could i not argue that i was not watching TV before i purchased the licence anyway

You can try certainly, did you own a TV recently purchased or rented during that period as the retailer or rental supplier will have automatically informed TVL of the sale or rental.

Make a formal request to TVL for the reasons for back dating the licence.

I thought that law had been repealed from July this year?

No idea on that we bought a TV in September and it was subject to the address check.
