Any video converter

Hi all.

 

I have just converted a video file to avi so I could watch it on my TV. After conversion, the movie works but the picture is rather small. Most of my avi files are full screen or nearly full screen. This one however has a big black frame all around it after conversion. Is there anything I can do to resize it?

Personally I have a cheap PC linked to the TV (just using the monitor connection, and a 3.5mm jack) and play films using PowerDVD. It upscales DVDs, AVI's and YouTube to HD 1080p resolution so the picture is really crisp.

Got a copy of AVS Video Converter for nowt. That done the trick. Sorted now. Thanks Loccy. I am interested in upscaling AVI's or other files to HD though. Can I save the HD file on my lappy and then copy it over to my flash drive to watch through my TV?

All depends on what your TV supports (which is why I like my old computer linked to the TV... it plays anything and everything)

 

Worth a try tho matie, the higher resolution the source, the better it looks. Upscaling makes things look less blocky but also in a lot of cases, less defined... maybe even blurry.

When you converted it was there any option to compress, maybe this is the problem?

DivX is another good prog that will convert to diff picture size, HD etc.

I have used Total Video Converter, and found it best for all type of conversion.

Ive also had problems converting videos in the past - they are very bad quality when viewed on a TV. Is this just because of the old type of video recording device whaich wasnt able to have high levels of detail?

OK what are you trying to convert? Obviously old 8mm camcorder will not give you blu ray quality no matter how you convert, but there are some ways to get better results. Is your TV a high def LCD TV or a standard CRT TV?

 

Once we know those details we can tell you how to get the best

Its video from my birthdays as a kid - standard VHS (i'm guessing) from the early 1990's. I used this product to convert it, which i bought from Amazon (pretty cheaply) 'ClimaxDigital VCAP302 USB 2.0 VHS to DVD Converter'.

The files are on my laptop, and view ok-ish when watching on there (15 inch display), but if i pause and try to take a screenshot it goes very pixely (not sure why?!).

 

The TV i've tried on is HD, a Samsung 42 inch. I wondered if its just the size, so the resolution isnt good enough?

 

Any help would be appreciated.

OK the problem in getting a still is the VHS side of things (especially if you recorded the original in long play or extended play). VHS didn't actually display a whole frame at a time, it kinda switched half a frame on the odd numbered lines, then the other half to have refreshed the complete frame (which is why if you see a CRT TV on TV you see wierd lines).

 

The best you could hope for is to use something like PowerEncoder to upscale to a DivX resolution
