Only just seen this-and like a few others was alerted by the thread title.

I am of the same view of many-if we are talking of corruption-I can think of far more deserving causes than some mentioned here-although for obv reasons I cannot name names.

Lets just say that those really deserving of the title are far away from the transport industry.

Wriggler makes good points-as do others.

I did not see the OP confirm that they have actually been a victim of any penalty charges-maybe can confirm ?

There is recourse in place to challenge PCs-but many people spend too much talking about them rather than doing anything really pro active.

Its a little bit like the DCA industry -every day we see complaints about them on the CAG,yet only a tiny proportion actually complain to their TS or CS.

Thats why they continue to be licenced.

Going back on topic,I have used NEX many times but only in travelling from Liverpool to Southern Airports, and transfers between.

I dont particularly care about director disputes or what goes on in the boardroom.

But more recentlly have been using megabus, which is a serious challenger to NEX.

I am no big fan of Brian Souter or stagecoach, but tbh have been unable to fault them so far.

I travelled from Birmingham to Liverpool for a quid and only had to book a week before.

Just booked a train from Euston to Liverpool also for a quid in March.

In a perfect world there would be no corruption..........and everyone would be happy.

In fact if such a world existed then sites like this would not exist.............and pigs might really be flying:lol:

Railway franchise holders submit a 'bid' to the Department for Transport. It is a long and very complex document, indicating how they will operate the franchise, and it makes 'promises'. Most are to do with running a certain level of service, meeting safety regulations and so on. Generally, they will have made some other promises, improving disabled access, or installing improved information systems or whatever.

Must confess, I don't know how a member of public could get to see the 'franchise bid', I guess a freedom of information application would have to be made. The Dft will monitor each company against the 'franchise commitments', and will 'talk' to them if there are shortfalls. If the company knows that it will fail to comply with something that was 'promised', they can ask for an amendment to the agreement, usually having to substitute a different solution to the one originally promised. My 'local line' promised to instal automatic ticket gates at all stations. 11 years later, they still haven't, but were obliged to put staff on site to 'replace' the function of the gates.

Wriggler7s general view of the franchise process is accurate and these bids will usually include very detailed examination of the proposed process of revenue protection & collection, which is important and will also be monitored by the DfT.

The short answer is that unless Lord Adonis breaks ministerial rules and tells us what was going through his mind, we will not know. I suspect though, that at the stage that the franchises were at, and the uncertainty of when the election would be, the 'decision' was based on how difficult it would be to re franchise the routes in the 'current climate' without causing a hiatus in the run up to 2012. Apparently, just before the end of the world as predicted by the Mayan calendar, there is to be a major school sports day in east London, and this requires a complete re-write of road traffic law and 'stability' in public transport.

I will be on holiday that year, just to avoid being crushed by the Bulgarian national Amateur darts team, and the Bolivian heavyweight male synchro flower arranging pair.
