Nearly six million people in the UK are to be told they have paid the wrong amount of tax.

About £2bn has been underpaid via the Pay as You Earn (PAYE) system in the past two years, with about 1.4 million people owing an average of £1,500 each.

But £1.8bn has also been overpaid and some 4.3 million people will get a rebate because they have paid too much.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said the "overwhelming majority" of PAYE contributions were correct.

Millions of letters will be sent to taxpayers across the UK informing them of errors in their contributions.

The first 45,000 are expected to arrive on Tuesday, with 30,000 informing recipients they are due a rebate of on average £418.

The remaining 15,000 letters will tell taxpayers they have underpaid and will have their tax code altered next year to recoup the money.

I suspect i'll be one due to my tax code being messed up my my 4 employers over the last 2 years.

lumey. I hope I am not one of those who have underpaid, I get made redundant at the end of the month. We got a letter yesterday from social services saying that my motherinlaw was receiving attendance allowance and she was not entitled to it. She lives in a nursing home, we have never claimed fot it so it must be from when she lived at home 5 years ago. No doubt we will have to pay back a hefty sum there

What a nightmare for you HF - I can remember you getting your job and how happy you were - redundancy seems to be happening more frequently these days :-(

As for your M-in-L's attendance allowance, why has it taken them so long to realise their own cock up ? :-x IMO, if it's their mistake, then tough, they should just close the file and you shouldn't have to pay a penny.

I was one of the ones who was overpaying, only discovered when another employee had to contact the Tax Office about something else :!: We then realised there were quite a few of us on the wrong tax code.

It took about six weeks but I ended up with a refund of over 100 quid :whoo:

I feel sorry for those who have underpaid.

Sorry, I'm laughing at the Whoooo smilie above - it looks constipated
