With the massive rises forecast in heating costs and the Government talk of a levy of up to £120 on fuel bills I decided to look for ways of reducing my heating bill. As the annual household energy bill is over £1,200 this means a possible energy bill of nearly £2,000 in a couple of years. Consequently I've fitted a replacement central heating clock that reduces my heating bill and carbon dioxide emissions by 25 - 30%. It's not cheap (nothing worth doing ever is) but the immediate savings will mean it's initial cost is recovered in about 2 - 3 years. One of the by-products is that it's a lot more versatile than the old system - I can have more than 2 on and offs a day meaning that if there's more than one person in the house (a shift worker maybe) then everybody can have their own settings and can change dates in advance. PM me for further info.

keeping British summer time all year would save energy, due to an extra hour of daylight each evening. Commuters would not need head lights switched on for the return journey, households would not need to use their lighting during that extra hour, and we could delay switching on the central heating.

If you want to delay switching on the heating or hot water until the last possible moment and only heat rooms that are in use or heat for a shower rather than a bath then you can. If you want to switch the heating on later because it's warmer outside or earlier because it's colder outside then you can. I suppose it's common sense - it's what you would do if you were around a couple of hours before you wanted your house at a particular temperature. It's so much better to have all that done AUTOMATICALLY. The system I use is similar to a commercial heating controller that costs thousands. The new system only costs hundreds and is much cheaper because of the quantities being produced. It's based on a microprocessor that's well tried and tested (you probably have one in your mobile phone) and is much more versatile than the bi-metallic strip used in some thermostats. If you're serious about reducing your heating bill and producing less carbon dioxide so that your kids won't drown (according to a recent government tv ad) then look at the way you control your boiler. I'm expecting to reduce my heating costs by £300 - 400 this year and every subsequent year. PM me if you want to know more.
