I'm so ashamed to say I was caught shoplifting a week ago. I have no idea what was going on in my head and it has been killing me ever since. The police were called, they were nice to me under the circumstances. It was a very small amount and my first offence. The could see in was visibly shaken. I didn't take much in other than the details would be sent to the procurator fiscal and I would receive a letter from them. They suggested I speak to my mum, but I explained that would be impossible as we have terrible family issues at the moment and this would kill her. They also suggested I see a doctor, but I am just so ashamed. I'm not making excuses for myself, I am old enough to know better, but will i ever feel normal again?

I guess what I'm looking for is some advice on what to expect. I've spoken to 3 separate solicitors over the phone who have told me not to worry but there is nothing I can do until I get the letter from the PF.

Has anyone out there been in my situation and could they offer me some advice. Did you manage to put this behind you, did it affect your career and life in general. I just feel hopeless. Any advice at all would be welcome.

Hi and welcome to CAG.

Please try and de-stress if you can. I feel that even though it will hurt, your mum will have to know as the PF will be involved.

Hang on a bit while I find a thread that may help you.

You may have seen this thread already but it is a perfect example of what you are likely to get.

This system does seem to work so as this is a first offence, they may refer you.

I have to say that the police have treated you well. good for them.

Now, dependant on the store, you may get some other letters asking you to pay a sum in 'compensation' If you do, make sure you get advice here before doing anything else.

Hi silverfox and thank you for your reply. The 3 solicitors I spoke to advised me that I don't need to tell anyone, I.e. family and friends that is. I couldn't possibly imagine telling anyone. I know my mum would just collapse if this came out. I do understand what you mean though.

some areas are trying out a new system to reduce the overall retail crime stats that involves a police interview and a form of restorative justice. Basically this is like going on a speed awareness course and retailers being passed intelligence about presistent offenders. The latter part wouldn't affect you and is designed to deter as that is a damned sight cheaper than other prevention/detection methods.

If where you live has such a scheme expect to be invited to a seminar and everything else is dropped.

Thank you so much for your reply. I have read about this so here's hoping. I guess its just a waiting game. I am absolutely ill about this and will never think of doing it again, completely stupid of me I know that. I just hope I can get my life back on track. I appreciate your response.
