I wondered whether anyone has got a Nationwide refund by making a polite telephone call? Lucky for me at present I only have one charge I want to claim back so if anyone has successfully made a telephone request it would be great to hear what you asked and if any what quoted acts you may have used? - any tips would be gratefully received. There are a few example, especially if you only have a single charge.

Just be nice, but firm, and see what happens. If they say "no, go away", say that there's been a lot of press recently and maybe you should take some advice...

So far, the people who've been pleasant with one or two charges seem to be getting refunds.

Good luck!

A&L: Settled - £6,200

HFC: Settled - £800

Shell Visa: Settled - £250

Egg: Settled - £700

Mint: Settled - £1200

RBS: Settled - £850

The opionions in this post are guaranteed to conform to the laws of physics, but pretty much nothing else...

If you have only one charge this may be a good way of doing it - ring the bank and just say it was an accident and ask if they could refund it on this occassion. I wouldn't bother quoting any laws etc, just ask nicely.

If they don't play ball then start as per the step-by-step guide from this site.

Good luck!

The phone call didn't work - a letter of explanation was suggested by the customer support team, so I sent one off yesterday............

I emailed a "tweakewd" version of the prelim letter to Charles Bacon @ Nationwide Head Office - I only had 3 charges and I stated so in the letter and advised him that my account had been conducted well apart from these 3 occurances which all took place at the one time. He didn't reply but I got a credit of the exact amount to my account a week later. :-D

Why not email him directly?

I did get a refund of a late payment charge and interest from Nationwide over my credit card payment arriving a day late, as a result of me phoning them. But it took a letter to Alliance & Leicester to achieve the same result. I think a lot of it depends on your initial demeanour on the phone and also who you speak to on the day.

Thanks for the above replies. Just checked my account on line and still now refund - it's only been 9 days, and not heard anything, so will wait a while longer then if still no refund I will try 'Bacon'!
