The matter does not need to be completed within six months. The prosecution has to begin within that time (or 12 months at the moment in Scotland).

 

Motoring prosecutions begin with a "Written Charge" (which is sent to the court) and a "Single Justice Procedure Notice" (SJPN - which is the defendant's notification that proceedings have been started).

 

These are supposed to be produced "at the same time." So, if you still have it, you should look at your SJPN to see the date, and compare that to the date of the offence.
