Hello

The Letting Agent, of our current property, has advised that when we move out, we won't get our deposit back until all the final utility bills are paid. I was going to use the deposit to pay the final bills, so I'm left in a bit of a Catch 22 situation.

Without digging out my tenancy agreement, do they actually have any legal right to do this considering neither they, nor the landlord, would be resonsible for those bills if I did not pay them?

Thanks in advance

Al

As long as the bills are in your name then it is illegal to withhold the deposit on this basis.
