Do you think that the evidence supporting the claim that any smoke is harmful to children and people with weakened immune systems is false or are you agreeing with it? There are literally dozens of studies proving the impacts of smoke on children, even psychologically...

 

For the record, I am in support of adults having the right to smoke... I just don't support their right to expose their children or sick relatives to the smoke when it could very well cause significant issues down the road for them... It isn't too much of a hassle to smoke away from children. If any, really... I used to be a smoker even before it was being beaten into us that smoking is bad for our kids and I still never, never did it around them... Always seemed strange to me.

 

I'm very interested in why you think this way, though... Can you explain your position? I know it isn't quite about quitting smoking but it does pertain to the subject.

I was thinking of real life. My Grandfather in law smoked like a chimney, my mother in law has just passed away at the age of 97, so it didn't do her any harm.

Oh! Okay, that makes more sense. You are right that for some people, smoking doesn't seem to have any influence on their health. Everyone is unique in their own way when it comes to anatomy and how things impact you, so there are definitely going to be outliers. Would you argue that these two people trump studies of thousands of people and how they are impacted, though? Or simply that these studies don't represent the entire picture and rather just a singular agenda?

If I recall correctly... Isn't a few of that from the soil treatment they use for tobacco farms? It's been a few years since I looked into the contents of cigarettes but I did find the impacts on health to be far reduced when people rolled their own cigarettes with tinned tobacco rather than simply buying packages of pre-made cigarettes.

 

I would be in 100% support of government regulation forcing tobacco corporations to reduce levels of toxins in the production of cigarettes. I can definitely agree with that!

Are just SOME of the chemicals in them and what is produced by smoking one. There is No reason at all for any of them to be in there apart from to get people addicted.

Darn... There are probably studies about the soil in tobacco farms. I'll have a quick peek... Hmm. It only speaks of phosphorus and nitrogen in the soil for tobacco farming, but nothing very much about chemicals and the presence of toxins. That is, though, a quick peek and nothing very thorough but I was sort of hoping it'd be easier to figure out if there's been a study on the soil of tobacco farms to determine what is through production/burning and what is through growth. Alas, I think we can all agree that rolling your own is better than buying pre-made, but it's probably still pretty bad for you...

The figures all depend on which side you bat for. If you are anti anything you can come up with reason why you shouldn't and figures and statistics to back it up, but then again if you are for something, you can equally as well come up with figures and statistics for your case.

 

I personally don't believe any of them. One minute red wine and chocolate are great for avoiding cancer and the next minute they aren't.

I agree partly with that conniff, but smoking is massively different. The chemicals are there and have been found and examined. Manufacturers are well known for including those chemicals in their product purely as a way to get people addicted and keep them addicted. In a sane country, this would be wholly illegal, but since the government make HUGE amounts of money in taxes off them, it wont change anytime soon.

I agree with that, there isn't a business in this world that isn't on some sort of rip-off. I used to smoke and really loved it. I still miss it now, nothing like a good fag after dinner.

Definitely know that feeling. I've been off them for about six years now and still get an urge every now and then. I rolled my own so I can only imagine how it'd feel for me if I had bought manufactured cigarettes instead. Probably wouldn't be capable of running too well, I reckon!

 

@Imp: Are there proposals currently open to the government to increase tobacco regulation?

The only regulation the government imposes on tobacco are the health warnings and the pointless exercise of taking them off display in shops. They will NEVER remove them from sale as the tax they would lose off them would be colossal. Not to mention the relevant political parties would lose millions in donations from the various manufacturers.

For example Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are products of combustion. Some you have included twice such as vinegar and ascetic acid. Many will be natural constituents of tobacco and some will be added for taste etc. Not all are harmful or addictive.

 

It is proven beyond doubt that smoking both active and passive are detrimental to health. Just because someone lives to a ripe old age means nothing. Smoking will have impaired some functions.

 

As to when and where people should be allowed to smoke is difficult. You can not drink on the streets of many towns and cities but you can smoke. The smell is to me very unpleasant and it makes us laugh when i used to think no one could smell my crafty fact on the bus on the way home from school.

 

I am quite happy for someone to have a cig in my flat but my partner hates it with a passion.

Chemical names are a nightmare,old and new. eg ethyl alcohol is ethanol which we like in our drink. methyl alcohol is methanol.

Methane is pretty much what fires our central heating. Oh and sodium chloride goes very well with vinegar on your chips.

There is only one foolproof way to prove it and that is to bring back a smoker who died supposedly of secondary smoke and put them in an environment where there is no smoke and then compare their ages at death.

 

Just get it down your lungs and enjoy it, sod everyone else.

I will stick with the same method we prove all other methods and proofs: the scientific way.

 

But lets form a queue for folks that don't believe the same chemicals when taken direct have no impact when secondary to put it to the test. Any volunteers to be first in line to gamble

But I've already done that test, 60 per day for more years than you have lived and I'm still here so science can't always be that accurate, it relies a lot on good guesses as well.
