This morning I had a phone call from the "International Routing Department" telling me that they were phoning to help me with the problems I am having with my computer, which are due to malicious content being downloaded whenever I download anything. They wanted me to log on to my computer and check it, and then they'd help me sort it. I asked if there was a cost. They said the scan is free, but there may be a cost if they need to help me put it right. I bet there is, I bet there would be something wrong, and I bet they'd want my card details!!
:mad2:

I asked lots of questions and gave them no information. They asked if I'd heard of cyber-crime. Er helloooo, yes I have which is why I have no intention if the name and address they have for me is correct. I asked for contact details so I could check them out and got an address in New York. I asked for British contact details and they gave me an address in London and a phone number beginning with 0206. I thought all phone numbers in London began with 0207 or 0208.

BT contacted who confirmed it's a [problem], phoned police who told me it's a [problem] and to contact Trading Standards, so they'll get a phone call on Monday morning, phoned BT Security Desk who suggest I contact OFCOM too, which I will

It even made me worry about logging on after the call in case they could somehow hack my computer, but BT assure me it's ok if I didn't let them access my computer.

I am so angry because no doubt others will fall for this [problem] and be ripped off, but I'm surprisingly shaken up by the call too. BAR STEWARDS!!!!!!!!

Hi Caro ....Same problem.I happened to be present when my Sister in Law received a phone call as you have indicated above. She passed the phone to me and the cheeky sods asked for her password for her laptop,to clean up the corrupted files, and they stated they worked for BT..Obviously did not give any info

Contacted BT,who confirmed the [problem], and got the same runaround to contact TS etc.

I think our Broadband providers have a responsibility to keep us informed of all malicious activity

Despite all you hear about Trojans, Worms, Viruses and Rootkits, no one know what is on your pc as any hacking or infection by a virus won't be looking to see what malware is on your pc, they will be looking for passwords and credit card numbers etc.

Even if they did code a virus to go see what malware was on your pc, they still don't know who you are and certainly don't have your name and phone number.

No one know who you are in this world of computers except your ISP. You have to go to court to get an ISP to release the name and address attached to an IP number, and you have to have a very good reason to ask.

Anyone who gets a phone call is only being the lucky [sic] one in the draw. They just ring select an area and ring a number at random as it is millions to 1 now that the household doesn't have a computer. For everyone that tells them to sod off, half a dozen more will respond how they want and give them what they are asking. Just like the private parking companies really, send out enough and you can make a living at it.

There was a Midlands company introducing a spam block to computers that showed porn on an unremovable pop-over. If you didn't ring the number, the pop-over stayed longer and longer on your screen until it was there permanently. Now any family man, or woman confronted with that will probably ring them and pay as how do you explain it to your loved ones that you haven't been watching porn and you certainly wouldn't want your young kids to see it.

They were caught and the law took it's course, but they and others just continue to think up different methods of making an easy living.

As for the Microsoft [problem], Microsoft does not ring anyone for any reason, so if you get any of these calls and have caller id, make a note of the number and give it to the police.

They had my name and address, but as the guy at BT said if we're not x directory that's easy enough to obtain.

It's available in a hundred places, it's not exactly a secret. For a fiver per month you can subscribe to a tracing website and get all the details you want. If your name is on the electoral register, all the other details are available on line.
