Hi All,

I'm new to the site, so apologies if this is posted in the wrong place.

I've just checked my credit file with Equifax, and I've noticed that a default has been added onto there that doesn't belong to me from BT.

I've just moved out of my father's house into my own place (he has the first inital and surname as me), and it would appear that his defaulted BT account has made it's way onto my credit file! The entry shows "Mr J XXXX" and the date of birth field is blank. The amount is only small, at £50 but this has absolutely destroyed my credit score!

I've spoken to my Dad and he has said he got into BT a while ago and refused to pay their bill, the account has since been passed on many times and he has no idea who it is with now.

Can somebody advise the best way to get this off my file?!

OK you need to write or phone the CRAs showing the default and place a notice of dispute on the entries (check the other CRAs)

Then Write to The Data Controller at BTs head office as follows ( send a screen print of the agency files)

Ref: account no. of ref. on the entry.

Complaint Inaccurate Default Entry.

Dear Sir,

I have recently checked by credit reference files held by xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx agencies and have found tha BT have placed a default entry rergarding a BT account, please not I am not a customer of BT and have not had any such account.

I am surprised that BT has failed to use due diligence when placing these entries and tracing the actual debtor, and I feel that BT should compensate me for making these defamatory reports.

These entries are damaging to my credit profile and must be removed immediately, you will confirm that you have complied with my instructions within 7 days from the date of this letter.

I am reporting bthis matter to the Information Commissioners Office forthwith.

For you information the actual account holder is Mr. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, resident at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

Send by recorded delivery.

Any Letters I Draft are N0T approved by CAG and no personal liability is accepted.
