Help is needed as HFC are trying to get money off me for my fathers debt, Basically my father got a fridge from Iceland and the loan was through HFC he did not take out the insurance. So when he died I phoned up the company to tell them that he had died and they then asked me what my name and address was and asked me to take the death certificate down to the local branch.

A couple of weeks later they sent me a letter asking for me to pay the amount owed, My father had no estate everything that he had was sold to pay for the funeral, can they ask me to pay this debt, when I did not agree to any sort of arrangement or even to take this debt on?

I believe they can ask for the debt to be settled from the estate before being divided up as per the will but if there was no estate to speak of after paying for a funeral and other legit expenses then I cannot see how they have a leg to stand on you cannot inherit a debt.

You may want to try writing to them explaining how abhorrant you find their attitude during this time of personal grief when you were just trying to do the right thing and how distressed this has made you etc etc and how should they persist you will contact the newspapers as its the kind of story the Sun would love im sure.

Good luck with it

Well they seem to think differently and have now threatened me with court action. The thing is I will go to court and defend myself against them as I feel this is insensitive and unjust....

Well if there was no appreciable estate then theyre on a hiding to nothing let it go to court and counterclaim against them for distress (check if you can do this first tho might not be possible) or failing that charge them £9 per hour for your time sorting it out and then go to TS and the papers

Sounds good to me I didn't think about charging them for my time.

Many thanks
