Our BMW 530d tourer had a problem with the self-levelling suspension i.e. the compressor failed a couple of months ago which meant being put on a flat bed and driven 200 miles home. All was well until last Monday when the warning light came on again. We took it straight back to the independent garage who fitted the new compressor last time. They fiddled with the wires and replaced connectors and the car went back up - until that is my husband tried to drive it to Wales! So, back on a flatbed again to the garage who have now shipped it to our BMW main dealer (as the original compressor was bought from them) for them to fix. However, they've now had it for a week, put a new compressor in which seemed to clear but then went down again and can't seem to find what's causing the problem - even after discussions with the BMW technical team.

Where do we stand - our car is undriveable????

Nowhere at the moment. If the part it's proved the compressor is faulty and it's a genuine one and can prove it then its a BMW parts warranty claim. However this seems unlikely.

Anything the BMW garage does you will have to pay for.

In the first instance Calm Down! I am trying to help.

Well for a start there is no problem on a car that can't be fixed.................!!!!!

If the original garage has agreed to pay the diagnostics charges then this is good news. The replacement of parts and the part cost will be your liability irrespective of who charges you.

The area they should be looking in now is the height sensors and the calibration of these however I have a current suspicion that the process the garages have to follow might be flawed as it is on similar derived BMW systems.

I'd wait for their response first so you know exactly what the issue is.
