Today we received a letter from halifax saying if we pay off 60% of the amount we owe on the credit card by the 28th the rest will be written off!

Funnily enough on Friday we move house and as soon as we get the money from the house sale we can pay this.

I'm however feeling wary about this. Am I right to be suspicious?

How old is the credit card, what is the payment history like on this credit card account?

I too would be suspicious and always when hearing that a lender is offering discounts on loans, credit card accounts.

Thanks

About 4 years old I think. We were ok with paying until last winter when my husband was out of work for a few months. That buggered up our finances good and proper (so annoying just a few months ruin everything!) so we've being doing the £1 a month thing since.

The bank is offering you this discount for a reason, and I wouldn't bet on it that it is to help you out.

Here is my suspicions.

The bank notice your having some financial difficulties, the bank is worried.

A) The bank has anticipated that your going to claim back charges on the credit card, which the charges are 40% of the balance, so no real discount. or; B) The bank have checked to see if it has an enforceable credit aggreement, noticed it hasn't, so knows its screwed, so before you realise this yourself, the bank offers your a "GREAT OFFER".

Have you checked if any of the outstanding balance is made up of charges?

Thanks

- Hobbie
