I'm helping my daughter sort out her finances and would appreciate some advice on this. In 2004 she owed £198 council tax, according to a letter from 'Jacobs Certified Bailiffs...' in which they demanded repayment of £50 a week.

To cut a long story short, a couple of months later and the bill shot up to over £300 which she paid in one payment. Three years have passed now, is it too late to try and reclaim those charges?

You can claim but first to ensure that you have the full facts you should first write to the bailiff company for what is called a Subject Access Request.

This is a request under the Data Protection Act for a full breakdown of the fees and charges. Only once you have seen this will you be in a position to identify where any overcharging has been made to your account.
