I'm glad that I have found this site it has been a breath of fresh air where the Abbey is concerened. I have been an account holder for the last 16 years with the Abbey and in the last five months have been charged over £160.00 in excessive charges - had the courage to send via e-mail and general post the template letter demanding these charges be paid back - I feel in control once again! :)

Hi, I'm another sad Abbey customer for over 16 years and have my statements dating back to 2002. Caculated charges totalling £875.20 and sent my first letter requesting repayment of charges. Interesting to see if we get the required response!!!

Last night I decided to e-mail the Abbey to get confirmation that they had by now received my letter requesting the charges to my account be paid back. I checked my e-mails several times today and no reply - even requested a read receipt. Last week when I e-mailed them they replied the next day ...... funny that isn't it!!!!! 7 days to go before taking the next step.

it's amazing how the banks manage to develop selective response to our communications ... can't believe they would be very happy if we chose to ignore the letters sent to us by them if we didn't like the contents.

... a little

Have now received standard letter saying it will be 4 weeks to look into everything. Had letter this morning from Abbey Complaints dated 6.6.06 finally responding to my original letter dated 20 May, they say the current account is good value and charges compair fairly with other Banks and most people do not incur penalty charges. They have enclosed the Financial ombudsman details and remain firm that the charges stand.

It is funny that I have received two letters in as many days. They would have received my LBA letter on Friday last week. Court stuff prepared and ready to go - do I just proceed now.

They have already had 14 days, I sent them a reminder letter a few days before the 14 days were up with a copy of the court paperwork that I will be submitting.

I filed against them on 31st May - deemed to be served 5th June. Still nothing from them so by Monday I can ask for judgement by default. Abbey are very good at taking things to the wire.

Have received today an acknowledgement of service that the Abbey have filed, they intend to defend all of the claim. Would someone please explain to me what happens next?

Got home today and found letter from Mr Squires as follows:-

I act for Abbey National Plc in this matter. Please note that any further correspondence should be addressed to me at this office.

In view of the amount you are claiming and the legal costs that Abbey would incur in arranging defence and representation at the Court, the decision has been made that on this occassion and in this case, your claim will be settled. However, this is on a "without prejudice" basis and is entirely without any admission of liablility.

I therefore paid into your account on 4th July a cheque for the sum of £275.26 (representing the claim of £245.26 and the Court fee of £30.00) in full and final settlement of your claim.

I should be grateful if you would inform the Court that this matter has now been resolved.

Alan Squires
