 First Direct have written with an offer this morning, 1 week after my claim for refund, so that's impressive. In my claim I did include fees charged for returning direct debits but they are saying they are not prepared to consider these charges. Is this right or should I hang out for the whole amount?

there is two ways to solve this one

  1. accept the over as part payment and pursue the rest ( see FAQ for letter for partial acceptance)
  2. Reject the offer and continue to pursue the whole lot

Your choice but the first option sounds good to me

I simply phoned First Direct to ask for my statements and they sent them to me within about 10 days by courier, no charge. Then I sent them a letter with a spreadsheet requesting a refund and now they have replied. Look in the library on this site for suitable letters and spreadsheets.
