  3. They do indeed, CB. A couple of days ago I read a news feature about predictions made 100 years ago and how many of them had come to pass. Readers were invited to submit suggestions as to what would be happening 100 years from now. You've probably already guessed my prediction.... We'll still be getting screwed over by the banks! Els

  5. Hi DD, Happy New Year! I'm sure we're all pleased that you have finally got this monkey off your back. Well done for sticking it out. Els
  6. Received a reply from my MP, Rosie Cooper. It seems I was pushing at an open door, because she is very much in favour of action to protect consumers from legal loan sharks. Here’s an extract from her letter: It’s essential that the Government gets a grip on this industry before the pressures of Christmas force thousands more consumers in West Lancashire and around the country into the hands of these legal loan sharks. That’s why I’m urging West Lancashire residents to sign the petition calling on the Government to introduce caps on the cost of credit. If enough people sign it, we can end legal loan sharking once and for all. Ms Cooper has also produced a press release dated 14th December 2011, to back up the above statement. I was hoping to add a link to the press release on her website but it has not yet been uploaded! She has also enclosed copies of replies received from Ed Davey at BIS and John Fingleton at OFT. I think the reference above to Christmas (and in the petition) should now mean Christmas 2012, because nothing will happen until the petition closes on 26th October 2012 and then only if it has the required number of signatures (5308 as at today). http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/20219
  7. Church Ladies With Computers. Thank God for church ladies with computers. These sentences actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced in church services: ------------------------------------------------- The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals. -------------------------- The sermon this morning: 'Jesus Walks on the Water. The sermon tonight: 'Searching for Jesus.' --------------------------------------------------------- Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. ------------------------------------------------ Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say 'Hell' to someone who doesn't care much about you. -------------------------- Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help. -------------------------- Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. -------------------------- For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. -------------------------- Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get. -------------------------- Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. -------------------------- A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow. -------------------------- At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?' Come early and listen to our choir practice. -------------------------- Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. -------------------------- Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used tocripple children. -------------------------- Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered. -------------------------- The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility. -------------------------- Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow. -------------------------- The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement onFriday afternoon. -------------------------- This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. 8. Hi DDA, Was the business a limited company? Are you still involved with your erstwhile business partner? Els
  9. That’s not so, cerberus. Some policies do. My daughter was sold a Paymentcare policy by Abbey in 2004, to protect her mortgage repayments. She was then, and still is, self-employed. The policy document clearly states that cover is provided for the self-employed and the definitions and eligibility paragraphs specify the exact terms. However, it was only when she submitted a claim to Abbey/Santander and argued, among other points, that she was ineligible by dint of self-employment, that her attention was drawn to the fact. Abbey did not supply a policy or any other document at the time the mortgage was completed and my daughter was unaware of the existence of the policy until she spotted the monthly direct debit for the premium. She now has a claim pending with the FOS but she has dropped the ‘self-employed’ element from her arguments. Els
  10. In the interest of balance, here is a swift response from Ms G-J http://www.thecampaignforchange.co.uk/ It took me half an hour to connect with rossendales' website and when I did, some of the link pages were blank. So, I think they are working late tonight.
  11. You're so right, brassy. But it does no harm to suggest it, on the grounds that it might not have occurred to her!
