  1. Is anyone using those ethernet plugs that plug into a plug socket? Are they any good? I've just moved, and we have 3 floors now. I'm quite happy to run ethernet cables up and down the stairs but the GF isn't. First thing she said when we moved in was "I'm not having bloody cables all over the place like last time!" Yet, she will of course, still expect to be able to stream videos and music to any room in the house. Wireless just isn't good enough, despite having a 270mg wireless router - it's just too fickle for my liking, so was looking for alternatives.
  2. Waitrose is the only supermarket I know of that actually has this correct. Technically, anyone in the queue in a "10 items or less" checkout with more than one item the same is breaking the rule. If you had 10 boxes of cornflakes, you'd be ok, and 10 boxes and one of coco-pops and you'd be fine, as you only have 2 items.

    Ah, I missed that. I wasn't here.

No idea. What's the Grangemouth thing? I've just come through Dover a few days ago - there was no sign of a blockade.

If Dover is blockaded, then there will be no cross channel traffic. When the French do it in Calais the British Govt. put pressure on the French govt to act. This could work the other way around. Supplies would still get to shops etc... from internal sources and other ports, yet the busiest shipping lane in the world would be at a standstill, blocking traffic up to the M25 in a matter of hours (see operation stack to see the devastation that causes). I think Dover is a weak point - one roundabout blocked and that is it. It would take about 8 cars to bring the port to it's knees.
  7. Yes and no - they have my money for as little as two hours each month. It's still 2 hours more than I would like them to have it, but as the law is tipped in their favour over how I get paid MY OWN MONEY, I have no choice at present. A situation where you are forced to use a sub-standard 'service' from a private company simply because you choose to go to work is morally wrong IMO. As to being covered by insurance for cash, I would still rather take my chances with the honest theives, rather than ones that, IMO, dress up their theft by way of a 'service'. I haven't had any insurances for a while either by the way - I find they are just a slippery as the banks.
  8. Nothing on the OFT site that I can find - they haven't replied to my email about it either. Have you a link?
  9. Precisely that. Somehow though, I don't remember them actually asking me to lend them the money. I don't have a bank account as I don't want to give any of them my money; yet, the fact that I choose not to do business with a particular 'industry' seems to matter not - I (we) still end up giving them our money through tax. Let them all burn I say - they made their bed, they should lie on it - to hell with the consequences. We pay a government to to just that: govern. Not help their mates out when they should have been keeping an eye on them because of the position they were in, and the consequences of people in that position making these sorts of decisions.
  10. The OFT rarely reply - and if they do, they either misunderstand the questions, or deliberately skirt them. I have had no direct answers to the many, many emails and letters I have sent to them. I gave up some time ago (and I'm sure a certain predictable person will have something to say about that).
  11. The comment wasn't aimed at any one person, just at all the people that always think there is an agenda. It happens a lot on here, and I think it's because we're all, for the most part, in the same boat - pushed up against the wall by banks, DCAs etc... and that causes us to think that 'everyone is out to get us'. I would say that if someone wanted to 'speak up' that they probably would have done so by now, no? Could it be that they haven't 'spoken up' because, simply, there is nothing to speak up about? If people don't want to use this site because of what they think has happened, then ok.
  12. I'm not really sure that anyone is bickering - just the usual 'conspiracy theorists' at work. With all due respect, some people have too much time on their hands if they think that there is something 'untoward' going on. I'm not even sure I can imagine what they think this 'conspiracy' is about, or what other reasons there would be for someone to no longer be a mod or sitehelper. However, I'm open to being enlightened by email if someone knows of a reason that I (and probably even those that have left) don't know about.
  13. Seriously people - not everything involves conspiracy. Some people have realised that either it's not for them, or that they just can't afford the time. In the great scheme of things, it's just an Internet forum, nothing more. There's no need to be concerned - we have it in hand - there are a LOT of very capable people here who can afford the time and who DO help others. I'm sorry to see those that left go, of course I am - but life is like that - things get in the way and *real* life takes over.
  14. I do mean Danish bacon, but the bacon you can buy in Denmark is nothing like the bacon we get here. In Czech they have this bacon called 'English Bacon" - I've never seen or tasted anything quite so rank. ...however, the lovely old lady that got it for me travelled 60 miles!!! to get it for me, so I felt obliged to eat it.
  15. What's good about this country? Gin and Tonic The amazing scenery The pub culture - despite it's deliberate demise over the past few years. Fish and chips ....and the big one that everyone misses: Bacon!
  16. It's not prohibited - banks don't really care where the money comes from as long as it goes to them. I'm sure they are not keen on it - in fact every month we have the same argument with them: Us: "I'd like to withdraw £xxxx.xx please" Them: "I'm afraid I can only let you have a maximum of £500" Us: Well you were given over 4 weeks notice, as per your T&Cs" (as they are each month) Them: "I have no record of that, sorry, I can only let you have £500" Us: Ok, then you'd better phone the police as no-one is coming in or out of that door until we have £xxxx.xx in our hands. Them: Let me check.........oh, ok, here's your money. EVERY month this is the exact same conversation. The entire nation cannot take the same approach, but you can draw all your wages out in one hit and not let them have any of it until the next payday for a very short time. Eventually, you never know, they might get the message. I think the run on a bank isn't such a bad idea.

    Fuel Protest

I think there needs to be a huge, well co-ordinated fuel price protest - go slows, blockades etc... Would starting a forum for just this issue help do you think? (it probably won't be here on CAG though)
  18. This is quite a contrast to most of the rest of the world - in France for example, it's expected that you would, say eat grapes from a bunch as you walk around, perhaps open a pack of biscuits while you are queing to pay. It's loosely known as customer service - something that has all but dissapeared from the UK over the last 15 years. ...but it seems now, they would rather prosecute their customers for doing this instead of encouraging them to actually buy their usually overpriced goods.

    Fuel Protest

Quite right - that's why it annoys me when people believe the rubbish about high fuel costs being good for the environment. It could be 15 quid a litre and we'd still have to buy it - there would still be more cars on the road year on year.
  20. Well, just be thankful that the money they get is enough to keep them sweet - lest they charge us more. Oh, hang on, as of next year we'll all have to pay £4.50 extra for the privilege of registering our cars. Nice to know the money is being spent wisely. Pay the most for the roads, get the least. The roads around where I live are also in an abysmal state. It's got a lot worse over the last two years.
  21. Ha ha ha - that's funny. The food Nazis can't make their minds up - one minute it's no eggs, no salt, I expect bread will be bad for us soon.
  22. She is quite sexy, but bugger having to meet the father-in-law - surely that would put anyone off their food!
  23. Would it be speculation though? If you had records of the share prices over the period that you no longer had the shares due to their cock up, you could prove an exact amount.
  24. Not so. I haven't had an account since August - and it's a lot easier without. My wages are paid into a friends account and withdrawn in cash the same day.
