I signed a contract with npower 5 months ago for gas and electricity and in the last 6 weeks I have got more than 2 letters that my meter needs to be inspected every 2 years. Since they have not been able to gain access , they have written that they will apply for warrant of entry. I have been with them for less than 6 months and they said the meter should be read once every 2 years, so why the hassles?

Can someone please let me know what's the best thing to do in a case like this as I am not ready to be calling them on 0845 nos

Welcome to the site.

Looks like they have got their wires crossed.

Could it be that they are saying they have not been able to see the meter at all in the last 2 years ?

Was N power the supplier before ?

It could be that they want to verify the readings.

Obviously if there have been problems with previous occupiers it will be in your interest to let them take readings, but it seems a little strange that they should be talking about getting a warrant.

You would have the opportunity to contest this at the Court-and a magistrate would only agree to the warrant if there were good reasons.

I would put something in writing to them or else send an email to their online customer services.

Tell them that you are happy to let them visit and take readings, but that it must be at a time/date convenient with you.

If you do it by letter, keep a copy and send recorded delivery.

You mention 0845 number, they are free from BT within your inclusive call time ie - the evening if free evening calls.

Have you lived in the property for 2 years ? if not the meter might not have been read within the last 2 years and it happens to be you living there whilst they need to read the meter. You could try sending them an email for a cheap convient way ?

They do have the right to get a warrant as who ever supplys you gas/elec owns the meter not the property owner/tennant.
