  1. Hello, I took out a student loan when I was at uni during Sep 2001-2004. In Feb this year I had to complete a self assessment tax retuen 2010/11, I am paid PAYE but I had additional income. I completed a self-assessment giving my income and how much I paid to the SLC. My employer did not making payments to the SLC via PAYE/National Insurance for the first 4 months during the 2010/2011 year. I paid a sum each month direct to the SLC by direct debit, to make sure that I did not fall behind. Via Paye, I missed 4 payments but I paid over £700 by direct debit. I have just had a demand for £500. The SLC say that my direct debits were 'voluntary additional payments' and do not count as repayments to make up for the 4 months that were not paid via NI. I have been told by the SLC that I still have to pay the bill, plus interest. I do not think this is fair because I more than I should on time. Any advice would be very appreciated! Thanks Katy
