Are there laws pertaining to the due customer care when bank charges alone have caused financial hardship

first thing , what a great site My girlfriend and I have an Abbey current account and over the last four months we have incurred charges of over £500 . this is on a total of about £200 of being overdrawn at various times. I have been looking at the excellent Library and your comments on this site and we have decided to fight back!!! Any tips or tricks would be very appreciated. We will be posting our progress as we go Wish us luck
