Hello, I have accessed my credit file on credit karma, I'm not sure how thorough it is compared to the other ones. However although my credit isn't great it's not as bad as what I expected. The worst thing on it is a concurring default from safteynet credit where I missed payments at the end of 2017 and then defaulted every month since.
I don't actually remember this debt and they haven’t sent me any correspondence regarding it at least in the last year. I sustained a traumatic brain injury a decade ago which affects my memory, it led to the breakdown of my life and career, which spiralled into various addictions and chaos. I went through a period of taking out pay day loans to fund this, and using payday loans to pay payday loans. My dad gave me a loan a few years ago to pay them all off and start again, consolidating them into one debt (interest free), which I have since paid back to him.
I'm a couple of years sober now, holding down work and decided to get my credit in order to maybe get a mortgage in the next couple of years as I've been privately renting for a silly amount of time.
I suspect when I took this debt I was not in the right frame of mind, I would not have been able to afford it as my income is PIP and working tax credits and I’m only able to work part time due to the residual effects on the brain injury. However, I would probably have lied on applications just to be accepted exaggerating my income.
I owe £650 and in a position to pay it. Would I be able to come to an agreement with them that if I pay it off they remove the defaults?
My family feel safetynet credit should hold some responsibility in regards to irresponsible lending and used more due diligence by requiring bank statements or some evidence of income.
Part of my recovery is accepting responsibility and not apportioning blame for addiction related mistakes. I’m also concerned about fraud implications of lying on the forms. But having these defaults removed would put me in a good position to apply for a mortgage and get out paying over the odds in rent.
