Claims ajuster is useless, when I asked for a completion date he asked me why i needed to know. he has washed his hands off it and is trying to force me into making a second claim so he doesn't have to deal with it anymore. I have written a letter to the insurance company but if their claims adjuster is anything to go by i'm expecting a fight.

I would advise you to talk to the CAB or FSA, because when I worked in insurance I never heard of automatic renewals. If someone forgot to renew the insurance could be backdated one week providing no accidents etc happened in that time. But I can't understand how they can automatically renew and debit money from your account without your consent. What if you renewed somewhere else and forgot to tell they, or they didn't have any record of you calling them, would you have two insurance policies for the same bike. It doesn't make sense. All insurance companies are regulated by the FSA, if you go on their website, get their phone number and ask them, they should be able to give you an answer right away.
