  1. Hi. Firstly, I'm completely new here so please accept my apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place, this question has been asked before or I've done something else wrong. But after reading some of the threads here, this seems like a great place to get some information. I'd like to ask a question on behalf of my wife who recently received a Notice of Debt Collection from Wescot Credit Services Ltd on behalf of Phoenix Recoveries (UK) Limited. The letter demands that she pays an outstanding balance of £380.28 or phone them by 3rd March. It then went on to say that failure to do either may result in court action being taken or receiving a visit from a debt collector . Not knowing what this was all about, she rang the number and was told that she owed this money to the Kay's catalogue company and that the debt stretched back to September 2001. When she pressed them for more information, she was told that they could not tell her any more as that was all there was on the screen. Now my wife did have an account, through an agent, with this company back then, but has absolutely no recollection of there being any money outstanding, but unfortunately, not one shred of proof that the money has been paid. Now I believe that a debt that is over six years old is no longer valid, and until this letter arrived, there had not been any contact from anyone before regarding this "debt" So firstly, before they can claim this money, do they have to prove she owes it or is it up to my wife to prove she doesn't. And secondly, as it is over six years since there has been any contact, does she need to pay it anyway? If anyone can help with this I (we) would be very grateful. Also any help with the wording for a letter to Wescot credit would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance
