I sold my house on 30 May and my mortgage was settled - however on checking my bank statement it appears the Northern Rock took a further £700 mortage payment on 1 June via DD - though it appears the DD has now been cancelled - would wlecome anyones opinion on this before I ring them. This must be an error??:?

I have a secured loan with First Plus and recently cancelled their Direct Debit in error. I have sent them a cheque for the missed payment, however I know they are going to try and charge me: Unpaid DD £27.50, Arrears Letter £25 and (perhaps) a default notice of £40 Obviously these are disproportionate in the same way as bank charges. Can these be challenged? Or indeed can I refuse to pay?

Hello All - Great Site (been away for a while). Looking back to 2004, I changed from one Northern Rock mortgage product to another. I appreciate that you cannot claim back any ERC, but I noticed (amongst another things) a £255 'admin' charge. I am shortly going to be moving house and I am moving from NR to Abbey. I note in a letter from my solicitor that NR are again levying a number of charges (including a charge to terminate the arrangement) - can anybody advise me (ERC aside) what they can and cannot charge for and what I could look to reclaim?

I have done my SAR letter (and will be sending it recorded this lunchtime) asking for the past 6 years statements. Rightly or wrongly I have combined that letter with a request for an immediate refund of the charges I know about (i.e. the £160 back to 2004). I will keep you informed and thanks for the advice and reassurance. Next I will be tackling Northern Rock over admin fees!!

Thanks Louis, you are quite right - just daunting when you read about court bundles etc!! I think I will push ahead - nothing to lose and a couple of hundred quid to gain!

I have my statements going back 4 years and have been charged by Abbey a total of only £160, I suspect there maybe another £100 or so in the couple of years before that. I know the money is better in my pocket than theirs, but (from expereince) can anyone tell me if such a small claim is worthwhile given the work involved? It seems most people are claiming thousands!!

Lula/Kia - Thanks for your advice - really useful. I will get my SAR off tomorrow and feel well up for the fight!! I will keep this forum posted.

Thanks for this Lula - would you advise asking for an immediate repayment of the £50 they have just taken or just put in the SAR?

Hello everyone - new to forum and in need of urgent advice. I have read the FAQs and I have been a customer of Abbey for in excess of 25 years. Once or twice a year I do go over drawn and get charged through the nose. On my recent statement I have been charged £50 for going over my overdraft limit and them paying a DD! I would guess I have been charged between £500 to £600 in this way over the past years (though I don't have all my statements - only those going back 1 yr to 18 months). Where do I start? What are my chances with Abbey as I hear they can be difficult? Can I combine a written request for a refund of the money they have just taken with a SAR? Many thanks
