Help needed with old BT socket wiring!!!!

In the course of decorating I have removed the first house telphone socket, stupidly without making a note of the wire to terminal connections. There is plenty of advise of the net but to make things difficult the one box I disconnected is old wiring.

There are four wires, GREEN, BROWN, BLUE, ORANGE, unlike the modern wires of 2 blue & white and 2 orange & white.

Can anyone with a good knowledge tell me which coloured wire connects to which terminal numbers. I have been told BLUE or ORANGE to either 2 or 5 does that sound correct.

Your help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Cheers Rooster, been to this this site but it doesn't refer to the old style wiring. I even called the company, it was this very helpful guy that told to to connect orange and blue to 2 & 5. Now I'm told Blue 2 / Orange 3. Not one of my better days as I still haven't finished the room yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should search on internet using search term telephone cable wire connection.

Is this the Master socket? Just use 2 and 5 and push one wire in each slot until you hear dial tone. Once you identify the correct pair, make the connection permanent. If you have a multimeter, you can identify the correct pair in the same way, set it to DC at 100v, and when the needle swings, you've got the correct ones. (Of course in the old days, we just used to lick the wires....)
